Bootcamp not working after partition resizing

Hi,

Following Loner T's advice, I'm starting a new thread.

My problem:

I run OS X 10.9.2 with an SSD which is partitioned. I have OS X and Win 7 via bootcamp. I also use Parallels to run the bootcamp partition when I don't want to restart my computer.

One day I thought I could easily resize my partitions but once I did that, I got my bootcamp ruined and I no longer can boot windows from bootcamp or Parallels.

However I do access the files from OS X.

What Loner T has asked me to try:

Please start a new thread, but it may be easily fixable.

Your GPT#4 and MBR#4 seem to be in sync.

1. Check if NTFS is intact (this should show you "R.NTFS" in the dump).

sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

2. Using fdisk,

sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0

setpid 4

07

flag 4

p

w

y

Reboot and test.

Dump:

Marco-Correas-iMac-3:~ marcoac14$ sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

Unfortunately the file is missing but I hope this is still fixable.

Good to see the NTFS header intact.

Please ignore that error messages which is related to older i386 stuff and continue.

1. You may need to try both Shift and Fn+Shift.

2. It should be tried after the screen goes black with the "hanging" cursor and before the screen that you posted.

3. There is also Shift+F8, F8, Fn+F8, that you can try.

Your DVD may be working.

I figured out how to get into Windows Boot Manager. I had to press any key to turn on the keyboard after selecting Windows. For some reason it turns off my keyboard.

After getting into boot manager, Windows is an option and I tried to hit F8 but it goes back to the screen I showed you.

I don't know what's going on but for some reason it won't recognize my dvd drive and boot from it.

Man, I'm getting sick of this. Not because of you of course, who is very kind by the way, but because OS X shouldn't have allowed me to do this. 😢

Is the Optical drive built-in on the iMac or an external Optical Drive?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392 is what is needed to fix your issue. Is there a possibility that someone can build a Windows Recovery disk/USB for you on a PC?

Please see the section "Create boot disk for Windows 7" -> "If you do not have the installation disk..." (Please be aware that this is a commercial product and I have never used it).

Sep 10, 2014 7:48 PM in response to Loner T

I tried what you said and built and loaded the installer on a usb drive via windows tool. Unfortunately it doesn't work either.

I just can't boot from cd/dvd/usb. It doesn't work for some reason.

AFAIK the only way to run bootrec is from the installation disk.

Is there a way to change the windows boot order on bootcamp?

Thanks

There is no UI to interact with CSM-BIOS that I am aware of. Parallels and VMware simulate the BIOS layer.

1. Please check the EasyBCD, but it is PC-centric. https://neosmart.net/wiki/easybcd/basics/

2. You can also try Hiren's BootCD, even though I have no experience with it.

3. Is it possible for you to reinstall Windows from scratch? This would depend on how much effort and data loss your are willing to tolerate.

Sep 11, 2014 6:30 PM in response to marcoac14

I have seen an issue on Windows versions where a missing "internal" device causes other drivers (USB, BT, etc.) not to be loaded properly.

There is a tool called Testdisk which can look for (and in some cases rebuild NTFS partitions) - http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk and http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step.

The "missing" device is logically between the Recovery HD and the NTFS header that you dumped from rdisk0s4 with the dd command. Test disk has helped quite a bit in the past, it still has its challenges. You may also download GPT fdisk from the SourceForge page, which is handy.

Using these two tools, one option would be to make GPT #4 (and MBR#4) start right after the Recovery HD, rather than where it is now. If that works, you may be able to repair the disk via Windows Recovery (or Parallels) if the "missing" device issue can be addressed.

This process can be slow and time consuming. If you want to try this method, let me know.

Hello Loner,

I'm back! I decided to give up on my Windows Partition and started my bootcamp setup from scratch.

However I believe my optical drive is dead. It won't recognise any dvd and it thinks all dvds are blank.

I also tried the usb method but I believe my iMac (early 2011) does not support this method.

After a while I realised that my windows file partition won't mount on startup and I can't manually mount is as well. Any idea?

Error message:

Mount failed

The disk windows hd files could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and the retry mounting.

It's a NTFS partition and because of this, verify disk and repair disk is not supported.

Any idea?

Thanks

Does your Windows partition show up in Finder? I have W7 and I did create a Repair Disk. I will have to check how big it is and if I can upload it to dropbox for you to download it/burn it. If your DVD is on the blink, there may be a possibility of using an external optical drive.
