ApplicationsHI,
You are actually giving us very little to go on.
Why don't you think the dedicated Apple Document on this will not be helpful ?What have you tried so far ?
What are the symptoms ?
You state OS X 10.9.4 which tells us the Messages app is up to the third build of Messages 8 (this version does not tell us in the About box as Previous versions have)
You imply it was working and that you have phoned Apple.
The fact it was working and now it isn't suggests that something changed.
If that change was going from Mountain Lion to Mavericks (which would have gone for the latest version) you may have a problem if you are not using an Apple ID that is linked to iCloud.
The App will fail if anything has happened to the AppleGothic.ttf font
A navigation to Your Hard Drive Name/Library/Fonts will reveal it.
This is actually an unusual place for a Font Needed by an App.
Some people have found simply moving it to Hard Drive Name/System/Library/Fonts seems to help.
Also check it with Font Book (In this listing it appears near the bottom)
Highlight it and use the File Menu > Validate if the Font is already On.
