System Preferences > Notifications > Twitter.
If you don't see it, add your Twitter account in System Preferences > Internet Accounts.

Sorry to bother you again, I have done what you have suggested still it seems I am not getting the Twitter notifications on the display even when I have clicked on the "alert" mode and also would like to know that is there a way to add the twitter icon on the Macbook tray in the bottom ? Thanks.
Are you sure you've gotten any notifications since you enabled it? As far as I know, there is no official Twitter app for OS X.
That was my question as I have not gotten any notifications but there is a work around as per your suggestion system preference> notifications> twitter and in there I checked the alert option but that is of no use it seems. Thanks for your reply.
What I meant was, are you sure you should have gotten any notifications since you enabled Twitter?
there is an option called alert/banner and so on where I have checked the alert option but still I have not received any notifications from twitter feed.
