Migration from PC Vista to Macbook Air not working

When I try to migrate following the instructions I've read and using the Ethernet adapter I bought yesterday, I get into a vicious password request cycle on my Macbook. It doesn't seem to like either my account password or my MacBook password and asks me to reset my password. I did the reset, but it didn't like that either. Fortunately, my original pw still works. Are there some simple migrations for Dummies instructions somewhere that don't require me to know all the Apple vocabulary?

Thanks for the instructions. Tried to follow them, but never succeeded with the final 3 steps below, ie my HP PC never appeared in the Migration Assistant window of my Mac. In the end I transferred folders and files directly and individually from Finder (where I saw my PC listed) to my Desktop (fortunately found my PC's admin UN and PW) through an ethernet cable. Not sure why MA didn't work?


  1. Once your PC appears in the Migration Assistant window of your Mac, click Continue.
  2. On your PC you should see the passcode that was displayed on the Mac. Click Continue.
  3. On your Mac, select the information you want to transfer to your Mac, then click Continue.
