If you never used iMessage on your iPhone then that isn't the issue. You can test to be sure that isn't the issue by asking your daughter to try turning off iMessage (in Settings>Messages on her iPhone), then sending you a text to see if you can receive it. If you can receive it when she has iMessage on, but can't if she has iMessage off, then you should call Apple support back and ask them to explain this as it's a clear indication that iMessage is the issue.
If your daughter's text messages to you aren't being intercepted by iMessage, then the issue lies with either your carrier or hers (if she ins't on Sprint). Carriers are responsible for properly routing normal sms messages. The issue is either that one or both of your cellular plans are not properly provisioned for sms messaging, or that they are not being routed properly. In either case, the carrier(s) need to fix this for you.
