    Hi there MichaelCobham,

The first thing you will need is the appropriate display adapter. This will depend on what is supported by the projector you are using, but you can use the article below to help you identify the specific adapter you will need.

About Apple video adapters and cables

Once you have the correct adapter, take a look at the Keynote User Guide for information on how to preset on a separate display.

    Dear Griff

Thanks for your pointers on feeding my MacBook Pro display to a separate monitor/projector display.

I now have the recommended MiniDisplayPort to VGA adaptor and to test the system am trying to hook up my MacBook to an elderly NEC Multisync LCD1700v monitor via the Thunderbolt on the MacBook, the MiniDisplayPort to VGA and the NEC's VGA input.

The MacBook has recognised something is going on - its login screen is displaying in background grey rather than the usual much darker shade approaching black.  There is no Password window being offered but the colourful "wheel of death" rotated on the MacBook screen for at least five minutes.

Now the same wheel of death is rotating on the screen of the NEC monitor - and has vanished from the MacBook screen. The finger pad on the MacBook is enabling me to manipulate the wheel of death on the NEC monitor - so the two machines seem to be linked. The MacBook display however remains washed out grey and I still have no opportunity to input my password and activate the laptop.

This situation has persisted now for at least 15 minutes - I can't believe whatever syncing may be needed between MacBook and external monitor could possibly take this long.  How do I make progress?

Any thoughts will be very welcome.  MichaelCobham

    Hi there again MichaelCobham,

Another piece of material you may want to read over is how to use multiple displays in OS X.

If you are experiencing more performance based issues, then you may find the troubleshooting below helpful.

Thanks Griff - will study carefully!

Have now managed to persuade MacBook to get unlocked after getting upset during its failed NEC connection - so I've learnt something at least.

Clearly this isn't going to be plug and play - but I think we have ascertained that the MiniDisplayPort to VGA Adapter isn't faulty.  I will make progress helped by hour suggested reading.

Many thanks for your continuing guidance.  Best wishes - MichaelCobham
