older mouse scroll ball not working

I have an older Mac mouse with the small track ball on top. The ball is not working. I can scroll down but not up. Is there a way to clean the ball??

Hi golfjazz,

You can clean the track ball on your Mighty Mouse using the steps in this article -

How to clean Apple products

Specifically -

If the scroll ball on your Mighty Mouse has become discolored or dirty, use a clean, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water to clean it. Wipe the ball and the surrounding area, making sure to rotate the ball itself to ensure complete coverage. If the scrolling feels rough or if the scroll ball isn't scrolling up, down, or side-to-side, hold the Mighty Mouse upside down and roll the ball vigorously while cleaning it to help dislodge any particles that may have collected on the internal hardware. Watch a QuickTime movie demonstration of this procedure. (The movie is approximately 600 KB.)

And make sure your machine is turned off before you wipe the ball with the moistened cleaning cloth. Before you apply any liquid or liquid moistened cotton bud or cleaning cloth you should disconnect your mouse and when you are finished allow it to dry for at least thirty minutes. Ideally more.

Another means of cleaning is to upturn the mouse and rub the mouse ball vigorously in the shape of an 8 on a clean piece of white paper. You may well see detritus fall from the mouse onto the paper.
