Sep 18, 2014 8:38 PM in response to JoeShmoe99by Loner T,★HelpfulDo not use rEFInd. There is another option, if you want to try it. W8.1 has much better EFI support than W7 or W8.
1. Delete the current Bootcamp partition via BA.
2. Create a partition via Disk Utility and format it as Free Space. An EFI install may have issues due to graphics, but this may tell us why it is failing.
3. Using the USB that you built using W8.1 ISO and BA, it should have an EFI Boot. Power cycle and using the Alt key select EFI boot.
4. Point to the partition that was created in step 2 and see how far you can get. It will get partitioned again into an MSR (~200MB) and MS Data partitions.
Caveat: I have had issues with a 2012 13" MBP and having some keyboard/boot issues.

Sep 18, 2014 9:52 PM in response to Loner Tby JoeShmoe99,It worked! I removed rEFInd and installed using Windows EFI on the USB onto Free Space created by disk utility!
Thank you very much!
But now there is another problem. As you said, as soon Windows updated the graphics drivers the screen went black and is staying that way

Sep 19, 2014 4:41 AM in response to JoeShmoe99by Loner T,I was going to warn you not to run Windows update. Since you now have a working procedure, please blow away the MSR and MS Data partitions, convert them to Free Space, and re-install Windows. Do not forget to install Bootcamp drivers. Do not use Windows update for HW drivers. I would recommend using only Security and Office updates.
Also, let the Apple Geniuses/Windows Technicians know what you did. It is painful at times, when they want to charge you money for something that they should be doing free.

Sep 19, 2014 4:53 AM in response to Loner Tby JoeShmoe99,I reinstalled and tried again using the Boot Camp drivers this time instead of Windows update; that is Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5621, but I got the same problem, persistent black screen.
I'm talking to Apple chat support now and they don't know what to do :/ either
thanks for you help!

Sep 19, 2014 5:52 AM in response to JoeShmoe99by Loner T,Did you update the firmware on the Intel HD3K as part of the Windows driver update? The Tech Specs of your MBA are http://support.apple.com/kb/SP683
There is also an Intel driver - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=&ProductID=3319&ProdId=3 319

Sep 19, 2014 7:42 AM in response to Loner Tby JoeShmoe99,I didn't see any firmware update but it might have happened since the update was on automatically.
The current install has no updates from windows at all.
I'll try this intel graphics driver but i still need the rest of the updates from the Boot Camp Support Software. Can i just install them individually?

Sep 19, 2014 7:45 AM in response to JoeShmoe99by Loner T,If you have the USB with all Bootcamp drivers, the setup.exe in the Bootcamp folder will update drivers for all Apple Hardware without prompting you.

Sep 19, 2014 7:47 AM in response to Loner Tby JoeShmoe99,That's what I'm afraid of because one of those drivers is causing my screen to go black.

Sep 19, 2014 8:35 AM in response to JoeShmoe99by Loner T,This is another option. Remove Windows. Re-install it. Instead of using the setup.exe from Bootcamp folder, run each individual .exe driver file except the Graphics driver. This will force Windows to use the standard driver, but this means connecting external displays will not work. You will have a functional system without fancy graphics. You will also have a yellow triangle with an exclamation for HW that does not have the driver.
If you want to post a listing of drivers from your bootcamp USB, I can help pick which ones to install and which ones not to.

Sep 20, 2014 11:55 PM in response to Loner Tby JoeShmoe99,Ok so here's what I did. My whole reason for getting Windows running in the first place was to use this external GPU. So I reinstalled Windows, installed the eGPU graphics drivers first (which only work for an external monitor), then installed the Boot Camp Support Software with my external monitor connected, restarted, then used Device Manager to roll back the HD3000 drivers. So this is almost the same installing each other driver individually.
It's still not perfect though. Nothing runs as well as it used to with a clean BIOS install. Unfortunately that's still not working for some reason. C'est la vie
Thanks for all your help!
If anyone else is reading this and needs help feel free to message me so we can give Loner T a break.

Sep 21, 2014 5:56 AM in response to JoeShmoe99by Loner T,On the newer 2013 rMBPs, W8.1 works very well. PreUEFI HW does create some challenges. Do you want to try a full backup, erase, install OS X and try a CSM-BIOS install, again?

Jan 26, 2015 6:01 PM in response to Loner Tby Gooz5,Hello.
I am having a similar issue to JoeShmoe99. I receive the same error message "We could not create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information see the setup log files." This message is obtained after Windows asks to reformat the drive.
I have reviewed this feedback that you provided to JoeSchmoe99 but am not sure on how to proceed. My computer is an iMac 5K with Yosemite installed. Here is the output of the disktutil list command. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Jan 27, 2015 1:17 AM in response to Gooz5by Loner T,Can you post the output of sudo fdisk /dev/disk0? BCA on the iMac5K (and BC 5.1.x) seems to fail in odd places, in the middle of partitioning, etc. Can you also check Applications -> Utilities -> Console for any error messages related to disks?

Jan 27, 2015 6:57 PM in response to Loner Tby Gooz5,ok. I re-reviewed all your posts again and finally tried something that I had not done before . . . and it worked!
I disconnected the thunderbolt cable that I had connected to the Imac. The thunderbolt cable linked to a external hard drive. This did the trick. Windows installed fine thereafter. Thank you!

The Windows installer is very sensitive to any storage that can cause it problems. Glad to see it working.
