I have a mac.com address I have had for a decade or more, and I want to keep using it. Because I keep a lot of my email, I had to pay extra to expand my iCloud storage space, and I suppose will have to expand it periodically forever. But when I tried to opt out of the added iCloud storage, my email (past and present) was no longer visible on my Mac.
Am I locked into iCloud as long as I use the mac.com address?
iCloud is useless to me; I have a laptop but no iOS devices, and the storage space isn't really adequate for a total backup of all my photos.

Sep 10, 2014 7:11 PMby randers4,You can add the iCloud email account to your Mac without syncing other data with iCloud by using the following settings: iCloud: Mail server settings for email clients. The email account will still use space in your iCloud account (which will continue to exist whether you use it for other things or not), so as it fills the available space you will still have to either delete or archive old messages or purchase additional storage.

When you sign on to iCloud, you get 5 GB of storage free.
You can delete the account in Settings > iCloud > Delete Account.
Note: Your Find My iPhone/iPad/iPod/Mac will cease to operate after you delete the account.

Sep 11, 2014 10:50 AMby quinnc808,I wish that were true ckuan. I would not have to have this frustration. The email came in at 3:08pm and this is the quote:
"We recently announced new, more affordable iCloud storage plans. As a thank you for being a current iCloud storage plan subscriber, we’ve upgraded your storage plan and you will be receiving a refund based on the reduced plan price."
So, NO I DID NOT ASK FOR THIS!! THEY UPGRADED ME WITHOUT ASKING!!! AND NOW THEY MAKE IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO CANCEL!!
Perhaps I should be talking to the FTC if I don't get an answer now.

I called the customer service line. after going through annoying questions, I am told that the 'renew' is canceled and I just need to delete it from my device. but I still have service until 2015. seriously? what does cancel mean to apple? I don't want the service. they should prorate the charge. I know they can because that's what they told me in the email they did when they "upgraded" me to a better price. sigh. very disappointed.

If I inactivate the iCloud account in Mail, then all my mail vanishes from my main (@mac.com) account. So either I archive most of my email in another way an then delete it from the iCloud account, or I will periodically be paying for increased storage.

And your ability to retrieve your email from an apple-linked address such as mac.co., me.com, etc, may also vanish. Mine did.
