Q: Phone still linked to previous owner but not available. How to activate again?

iPhone still linked to previous owner. What if the previous owner is no longer available. How to activate again?

Let's say the iPhone belongs to my father who just passed away. Now I have the iPhone and want to make use to it. I don't know his account username and password and he is not coming out from grave to tell me. How I can activate the iPhone again?

iPhone 4, iOS 7.1.2, Activation Lock

"Let's say" ?  If that is in fact the case, I would contact Apple support: Apple ID: Contacting Apple for help with Apple ID account security

I would guess that they may be able to help with proof of his ownership, a death certificate, and possibly other documents.

If you are looking for a way to bypass Activation Lock without the password, there is not one.

Hi FoxFifth. Well this is not the case, I was just asking. What if it is linked to a person who you have lost contact with? Maybe you lent your iPhone to a friend's friend's friend who you can no longer get in touch with. I understand the lock is there to protect the owner of the phone, Apple needs to prove that the phone is stolen for not allowing me to activate. If the phone is not reported stolen, there is no reason why I can not activate.
