Can't get 4k support with Seiki 39" TV through HDMI

I purchased a Seiki 39" SE39UY04 from Amazon, and I have a Macbook pro retina with the Intel Iris chipset.

When I plug the TV into the HDMI port, the "Best Available" is only 1080p (1920x1080). I can't get anything higher.

I am running 10.9.4, and looks like I should be able to get at 24fps the full 4K resolution.

Is there a way to force it? I could get an active thunderbolt adapter, but it looks like this should work.

Any ideas? Thanks

Hello there, larissafromlaurel.

The following Knowledge Base article provides some great information in regard to working with 4K Displays:

Using 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs with Mac computers

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6008

This section may prove helpful:

Adjusting your display

Use System Preferences > Displays to adjust or scale the resolution on your display. This can make text and objects appear larger or give you more space on your screen.

User uploaded file

Hovering your mouse over one of the resolution options will show more detail on that option. To get a Detect Displays button to appear, press the Option key. To see all the available resolutions, hold down the Option key while clicking the Scaled button.

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

Cheers,

Pedro.

I have the same issue as larissafromlaurel. However, when I chose 'Scaled' I do not see what's pictured. Instead I see a list of resolutions, that max out at 1080p.

Here is my laptop info...

MacBook Pro

Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014

Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics Intel Iris 1536 MB

Software OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)

Any help or direction would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Although completely true, there's more to it than just that.

I can't speak for the OP, but I'm using an Active MiniDP to HDMI 1.4 adapter and still experiencing the same issue.

I believe it has something to do with the Intel Iris drivers, because I have this issue with my laptop for work (2014 MBP Retina 13") but not my personal laptop (2013 MBP Retina 15"). I believe my personal laptop has a discrete Nvidia GPU.

Nov 4, 2014 8:32 AM in response to hypno7oad

My brand new retina macbook pro 13 (RMBP13) with iris shows the same available resolutions as larissafromlaurel and hypno7oad when connecting to seiki 4k 39" with latest firmware, with both yosemite and mavericks. When using Accel HDMI adapter with RMBP13, still shows max of 1080p at 60Hz.

I also have a late 2012 retina macbook pro 15 (RMBP15) with discrete graphics. When connecting to that computer's built-in HDMI port, similar situation. However, when connecting with Accel adapter, 4k res at 30Hz shows up, as its supposed to, and works well on Seiki. In other words, it's not the TV or the monitor - its the 2014 RMBP with Iris.

Yet, there are videos online of Iris retina macbook pro's (15") driving the Seiki monitor at 4k.

This is very confusing and something is very wrong. I think this may be a new problem and Apple needs to fix this. Very frustrated and have already wasted too much time on something that I was expecting to work right away based on previous experience with comparable Apple products.

Your Mac sends a query 1) at Startup, 2) when the Mac-end of the cable is inserted, 3) upon waking from sleep, and 4) when the Option-"Detect Displays" button in Displays Preferences is used.

The display responds to this query with it name and its capabilities. These are reflected in this report:

About This Mac > ( More info) > Report > Graphics & Displays

User uploaded file

to use higher than 1080p, your display must tell the Mac it is capable of higher than 1080p. Early reports are that many displays must have their internal parameters changed (in the DISPLAY) including the use of Multi-Stream Display protocol, to get to higher resolutions.

Nov 5, 2014 11:19 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

The HDMI out on the mac has a 162Hz pixel clock set for some reason. This makes uhd at 30Hz, which requires ~300Hz invalid. I used switchresx yesterday and got uhd at 18Hz via built in HDMI. With the latest 39” UHD firmware update from Seiki, this looks great visually, and is usable, but likely too baggy for many users. I write documents and code though so its fine for me temporarily.

Thanks for the reply.

However I believe the screenshot you showed is actually showing what the display is currently running at, as opposed to all the of resolutions it supports.

Also, for this particular monitor you can find people on youtube who run it fine without multi-stream on macbook pros.

I used switchresx to get the EDID info that the monitor is reporting.

Sadly I'm not fluent in the format, however to my untrained eye it does seem to list Mode = 3840 x 2160 @ 30.000Hz

Here's the whole thing for anyone interested.
