Upgraded to iTunes 11.4 and now it won't sync my iPhone 5s-sync button is greyed out.

I'm seeing this as well, for all Devices attached to the machine.

My operating assumption for me is that they forgot to include 32-bit resources in the 11.4 distribution, but it seems that's far from common in the errors others are seeing.

Other symptoms include the pervasive "Can't load AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" error (after deleting and reinstalling from iTunes 10.4 pkg) it still won't load because it lacks 32-bit resources,

% sudo kextutil AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext

I'm also experiencing the console spam from iTunes Helper crashing and respawning repeatedly and filling up the system.log - apparently in "AirTrafficHost/ath" code.

In any case, the net result is that, while devices (ranging from the iPhone 3GS and 4S to the iPhone 5s and iPad Retina Mini, both with and without "Sync over wifi" checked) do show up in iTunes 11.4, they show as mostly containing "Other" resource types with disabled "Sync" buttons and manual backup buttons that return quickly without initiating a Backup. It's possible iTunes is reporting something in the system log when this fails, but since the logs are overwhelmed with iTunes Helper errors, it's impossible to tell without a lot of sifting.

I'm near the very bottom end of Macs which are within the iTunes system requirements (10.6.8, Intel Core Processor): Mac Mini w/Intel Core Duo (32-bit) + 2GiB RAM, plenty of disk.

I'm dealing with the same thing. It's been driving me insane the last four hours. I updated tonight and went to put a new song on my phone, when I noticed I couldn't drag and drop straight to my iPhone 5s anymore, which was strange considering I can always do that (did it just a night or so ago with a few songs from my band, before this new update, and I haven't changed any settings). I have completely erased and restored my 5s from an iCloud backup three times now, to no avail. Restarted my Mac multiple times (I run Snow Leopard) and still nothing. Now I'm more mad than before because after all the restoring I did, I can't put ANY music on my phone, besides my Purchased stuff, which isn't even a third of my music library. I can't put anything on my phone at all, telling the Mac to sync automatically does nothing. I set it to do that, clicked on "On This iPhone" and it's just a list of grayed out songs that absolutely refuse to sync to the phone. I've never had this sort of issue before. I love Apple, I've been with Apple for 5 years now with iPhone and 3 years with my Mac. I've come to expect better from them than this, it's a little ridiculous if I can't even sync my own music to my own phone. Glad to hear I'm not the only one having the issue though.

I hope we find or get a fix soon. This is way ridiculous.

For what it's worth, I'm on a 2006 Core Duo Macbook, *attempting* to sync with my iPhone 5s.

Same here, updated Sep. 10 to itunes 11.4 without thinking about what could happen. Since then I have not been able to sync my iphone 4. Sync button greyed out. The capacity bar shows "Other" instead of groups ("music", "photos", "apps", etc) and it also shows a higher capacity usage. The phone still shows 8.5 GB available (out of 32 GB). iTunes says I've overused my capacity. Any ideas how to solve this? How to force-downgrade itunes, if that helps?

Via another thread, iTunes 11.4 not showing in Mac App Store Updates, I was able to track down an iTunes 11.3.1 installer, crack it open with Pacifict and replace all the 11.4 components with their 11.3.1 equivalents (to avoid warnings like "Skipping component "com.apple.AirTrafficHost" (351.6.0-351.6.0-351006000000000-*) because the version 448.0.0-448.0.0-448000000000000-110 is already installed." in the installer logs), force quit iTunes Helper, delete iTunes 11.4 and run the 11.3.1 installer to get back to a working state.

So far, everything seems to be working acceptably well - I've done several backups and syncs of iOS devices of varying vintages - so I don't think 11.4 monkeyed around with the library storage format very much, if at all.

If I'd had more patience, I'd have stepped through each of the nine components in the installer to diagnose why 11.4 is failing so hard.

Isn't that Apple's job to fix all those components after breaking a working iTunes app with their update? I don't feel comfortable "cracking open" components and meddling in the installer logs. I don't know about others, but that's foreign territory to me.

I saw the same on my first install attempt. The installer log (cmd-L in installer and select "all logs") reports that it won't install a bunch of components because newer versions exist. It's one (or more) of those components from 11.4 that's failing. I tracked them all down and removed/replaced them. Then the install of 11.3.1 was successful.

For me, it was easiest to open the installer with Pacifist to find out where they went. I suppose running lsbom for all the individual Archive.bom files would have worked as well.

I have this same issue also and I had a support tech call me to fix the issue...The guy put me on hold for about 8 minutes and my call ended up being disconnected.

Same as you all, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, installed iTunes 11.4, and hosed being able to do a iPhone 5s sync/backup. No amount of deleting iTunes or restoring my iPhone helped. And since I don't have Time Machine, I had to erase my startup drive, install 10.6.3, update to 10.6.8, update iTunes to 11.3.1 to revert back to a working state.

And low and behold, through my own carelessness, I blindly let Software Update install iTunes 11.4 again! 😟

Looks like I'll have to wait for Apple to fix this ... and perhaps they've already done so with iOS 8. I'm on a first generation black MacBook (2006), so maybe it's just time to get a new computer as well....

Same thing here, Mac Mini Duo (2nd gen 2006) running Snow Leopard. Updated to iTunes 11.4 thru Software Update. Got the error that "USBEthernet..." was not properly installed, then said the install was successful. Tried to sync iPod Touch gen4, all the files say "other", and the sync button is greyed out. IPhoto starts when there are new pics, though, and downloads them OK, so it definitely seems to be an iTunes 11.4 thing. Installed an earlier version, but it didn't help. Looks like we gotta wait for them to fix this. In the meantime, they've bricked my good ol' iPod Touch (at least so far as syncing calendars, etc.)

Ditto. Installed iTunes 11.4 and realized something was amiss when I couldn't add music to my iPhone 5 from the iTunes library. Everything being described is consistent - the memory bar showing only "Other", the Sync and Restore Backup buttons being grayed out, Back Up Now not actually doing anything, etc.

I contacted Apple Support and no one, including a customer support supervisor, was aware of the issue or knew of a fix beyond uninstalling and then re-installing iTunes (don't bother, it didn't work). Definitely a software issue and one hopes Apple releases a fix soon.

uninstalling 11.4 and reinstalling 11.3.1 does work. You just need to uninstall the components and frameworks that the installer puts in place alongside the iTunes application. (These are at various places inside /System/Library and /Library - I don't have a comprehensive list handy). My guess is that it's just one or two components that are faulty, but I removed them all to be on the safe side.)

the key during the 11.3.1 install was the entries in the logs which call out the components it won't replace - because the newer 11.4 versions are in place:

Skipping component "com.apple.DeviceLinkX" (5.0.0-264.0.0-264000000000000-*) because the version 5.0.0-264.0.0-266000000000000-552 is already installed.

Skipping component "com.apple.mobiledevice" (710.5.73-710.5.73-710005073000000-*) because the version 757.1.5-757.1.5-757001005000001-7 is already installed.

Skipping component "com.apple.MobileDevices" (1.0.0-710.5.73-710005073000000-*) because the version 1.0.0-757.1.5-757001005000001-7 is already installed.

Skipping component "com.apple.driver.AppleMobileDevice" (3.3.0-3.3.0-243000000000000-*) because the version 3.3.0-3.3.0-256000000000000-100 is already installed.

Skipping component "com.apple.SyncServices.AppleMobileDeviceHelper" (5.0.0-921.0.0-921001000000000-*) because the version 5.0.0-927.0.0-929000000000000-183 is already installed.

Skipping component "com.apple.AirTrafficHost" (351.6.0-351.6.0-351006000000000-*) because the version 448.0.0-448.0.0-448000000000000-110 is already installed.

For those with access to the 11.3.1 installer, you'll notice when running it (by selecting "Installer Log" from the Window menu and setting the Detail level to "All Logs") that a number of components are skipped "because the version [newer] is already installed."

In order for all of the 11.4 components to be replaced, you will need to remove, in addition to /Applications/iTunes.app,

• /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework

Having done that, and re-running the 11.3.1 installer, the buggy 11.4 version will have been removed and 11.3.1 restored.
