Q: Upgraded to iTunes 11.4 and now it won't sync my iPhone 5s-sync button is greyed out.

I upgraded to iTunes 11.4 today, and now I'm  not able to sync my iPhone 5s.  The sync button is greyed out.  I tried reinstalling, reauthorizing, signing in again in iTunes and my iPhone. I also restored my phone twice...not sure what else to do.  I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) on an iMac Intel Core Duo.  Thanks in advance for your help.

    Thanks @cwa2, that worked.  The trick is indeed to remove iTunes 11.4 & the components that you listed in Library & System/Library (I wasn't able to find /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iTunesAccess.framework), & then reinstall iTunes 11.3.1. Both my iPad & iPhone5 are now sync'd.

    "Hey everyone who is having this issue just go to this apple link and download and reinstall this version of itunes and your grayed out sync issue should be resolved..."

    On the surface this didn't make any sense, so I had a look.

    I originally downloaded the .dmg version on September 10th:

    [13:18] nightowl:/<1>Media/Disk images % ls -l iTunes11.4.dmg

    -rw-r--r--@ 1 earle  staff  242940774 Sep  9 05:52 iTunes11.4.dmg

    I downloaded the one that is on the current page, and lo and behold, it's different!

    [13:44] nightowl:/<1>Media/Downloads % ls -l iTunes11.4.dmg

    -rw-r-----@ 1 earle  staff  242433227 Sep 25 13:17 iTunes11.4.dmg

    Now the fun part: the new version is almost half a MB smaller!  "Curiouser and curiouser ... "

    The "install iTunes .pkg" files inside are, of course, changed.   3 files were different.  So I extracted everything from both .pkg files and compared them:

    [14:05] nightowl:/var/tmp % diff -rC 0 iTunes\ 11.4\ {old,new}

    So, as you can see, the newer version is still called "11.4" but the SourceVersion id of several components is bumped up to 1140011004000019 now.

    Also, note that the AirTrafficHost Framework got bumped from version 448 to 448.100 (SourceVersion 448100000000000).

    Next I looked at the actual Payload files, in particular the Payload inside MobileDevice.pkg.  I can verify that the following Frameworks and Bundles were changed (based on dates):

    [14:24] nightowl:/var/tmp % diff -rC 0 MobileDevice_Payload_old MobileDevice_Payload_new | egrep ramework\$\|bundle\$\|LaunchDaemons/

    BUT!!!   BUT!!!  BUT!!!  AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext was NOT CHANGED:

                    my.result.type = 'Fatal';

                    return false;

            }

            return true;

    }

    Someone at Apple clearly doesn't like 10.6.8 ... or maybe the 'hostArchitectures="i386"' means that it's supposed to check for 32-bit 10.6.8 and "ERROR_0" out if it finds it, but somehow the test didn't work?

    ... i'm not much of a conspiracy theorist, but i do think that there is a possibility that apple gradually and deliberately (as having already been doing) wants to make it harder for people with old operating systems (which also means no recent money inflow from those) to update their soft-and hardware. surely they wouldn't want their own products to be so good that they could last more than -oh my gosh- 5 years..! -end of sarcasm-

    as to you're comment earlier: i'm neither sentimental, nor cheap, but i simply do not see why to replace something that has been working perfectly fine (and still would, if apple provided software that was compatible) -my 2006 macbook pro still works better than any pc. it's still faster and much more nimble than my lenovo from work, which is only what, a year old now? my mac is up and ready in 10 seconds and shuts down in 5! and it still looks like new, body is fine, keyboard and screen as well! i'm running on my second battery now, and i had a little improvement work done (2gb ram and 250gb ram).... so why chuck it and buy a new one? i was raised to value my belongings and not throw them away everytime something new is released. i even had my older brother's old iphone until it got stolen...

    they clearly want us to spend money on new gear, rather sooner than later. so i am most definitely not holding my breath for a sustainable fix for this problem. and then again, we probably have to admit -being totally realistic now- that 32bit does not lie in the future of computing anymore.

    - it just would be nice to have the freedom of choice sometimes.. -end of rant.

    Bravo! Excellent detective work. At least nobody else will have quite the same issue, as it seems like AppleUSBEthernetHost is not necessarily required for syncing. It was broken for me from 11.3 after all, and that still worked.

    Kind of a crappy move to silently update the software though.

    After the 8.0.1 fiasco and other blunders it's no wonder they try to sweep this one under the rug if they can.

    Somehow after all I tried, and Apples discreet bug fixes in iTunes I'm up and running my iP6 and everything is syncing / backing up to itunes 11.4 & the iPad Mini is working again as well.  Phew!  Just wanted to come back and thank everyone for their input and work on this issue. Yep, I've got to report the same!

    2006 MacBook Core Duo, 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, re-installed the 'new' 11.4(18) iTunes and for the first time yet, I'm able to sync my new iPhone 6 on iOS 8.0, and my iPad Air on iOS 7, together with my old faithful 60GB iPod.

    Thank god for that. I am booked to receive a (3rd), call back from Apple Support tomorrow, I'm interested in what they have to say about it all now things appear to be working as they should.

    Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this post.

    Also confirming that 11.4 via Software Update now works (syncs, and shows the file space properly).

    I'm glad they fixed it, but agree it's a little skeezy that they did it without mention, or even a change of version number (not that they acknowledged it in the first place).

    Thanks again for the help here in keeping us running.

    Thanks for the updates, guys.  I'm still a little paranoid about installing this one.  My 9 year old iMac is still going strong on 10.6.8 despite a little chugging here and there when flash is involved.  Want to see if I can reach the 10 year mark!
