Q: Upgraded to iTunes 11.4 and now it won't sync my iPhone 5s-sync button is greyed out.

I upgraded to iTunes 11.4 today, and now I'm  not able to sync my iPhone 5s.  The sync button is greyed out.  I tried reinstalling, reauthorizing, signing in again in iTunes and my iPhone. I also restored my phone twice...not sure what else to do.  I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) on an iMac Intel Core Duo.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Same thing happened to me :  upgraded, then downgraded, got iP6, upgraded again, doesn't work.  The restoration worked fine, but then when I went to add other content it went right back to the fuzzed out sync button and yellow "other" status bar.

I'm sorry but this is complete BS.

It seems the issue is that iTunes 11.4 will not run correctly on a Mac running OS 10.6.8. it also appears that whatever type of iPhone you use doesn't seem to matter.

I'm on a 2010 Mac Pro (64-bit - that's important) running 10.6.8 and iTunes 11.4 works just fine for me.

People on old, 32-bit only machines running 10.6.8 are the ones that are hosed, due to the 11.4 AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext being 64-bit only.

You may have had a problem b/c cwa2 had a space in the middle of the last instance of `bundle' for that particular file.

Just open Terminal.app and remove it using `sudo rm -R', as in: sudo rm -R /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library/MobileDevices.bu ndle

Okay, apparently there is a permanent space in that one (***, make sure you delete the space in bu_ndle).

exactly, it is the 32-bit issue. i wonder if it could work, to upgrade to itunes 11.4 and then afterwards exchange the faulty AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext with the 32-bit one from a back-up? but then again, itunes still wouldn't work properly..

does anyone know, if a 32-bit machine can be upgraded to 64-bit?

problem is that all os x after 10.6.8 don't run on 32-bit machines - i guess this is a similar problem there, all newer os x run only with 64-bit machines? i wasn't aware of this issue until now - will do some serious reading.

generally, apple has no interest in us - we don't generate money when not upgrading to newer machines - and they already showed that with not making the newer os x compatible with our machines. i do not have that much hope that apple will address this at all.

real pity, because i work on that 2006 machine, because it still works ace, still looks fantastic, and has absolutely no issues other than the 32-bit one.

Hey guys, I got iTunes 11.4 iOS sync to work on a 32-bit Intel Mac

    Screen shot 2014-09-19 at 10.02.29 PM.png

    Here's how to do it:

    - Before installing iTunes 11.4, save the 9 files(from iTunes 11.3.1 install) cwa2 mentioned in earlier posts to a folder:

    • /Library/Frameworks/iTunesLibrary.framework
    • /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library/MobileDevices.bun dle
    • /System/Library/Extensions/AppleMobileDevice.kext
    • /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext
    • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AirTrafficHost.framework
    • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreFP.framework
    • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DeviceLink.framework
    • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iTunesAccess.framework
    • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework

    - Install iTunes 11.4

    - Locate and replace the current versions of AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext and AirTrafficHost.framework

    - Reboot (not sure if this is necessary but I did it anyway)

    - Tada!

I'll be observing this set up and see if all is well. I'll let you guys know if I find any problems. I'm still not sure if I need to replace all the 9 files.

    Thanks, cwa2, for your suggestions.

On, my early 2006 Intel iMac core duo (2 GB of RAM) running 10.6.8, I checked the dates of the 9 files that cwa2 mentioned (after I updated to 11.4) but only the last five files (within /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/...) had dates of 9/13/14 (the date I did the update).  The first file (/Library/Frameworks/iTunesLibray.framework had a date of 5/18/14.

The second file (the one with the MobileDevices.bundle had a date of 9/12/11.

The third file (with AppleMobileDevice.kext) had a date of 11/1/07.

And the fourth file (with AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext) had a date of 5/28/09.

This suggests to me that perhaps only the last five files (within /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ need to be deleted or replaced (before re-installing 11.3.1).  I haven't done this yet since I'm hoping (perhaps foolishly) that Apple will give us an update soon to fix this fiasco.

This didn't work for me, because the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext even from 11.3.1 still had an issue:

(kernel) kxld[com.apple.macos.driver.AppleUSBEthernetHost]: The super class vtable '__ZTV20IOEthernetController' for vtable '__ZTV20AppleUSBEthernetHost' is out of date. Make sure your kext has been built against the correct headers.

Some searching revealed that I needed an older version even than that. The older kext DID allow me to use iTunes still, though, which is why 11.3.1 appeared to have been working.

I used the advice in this thread: http://www.motherboardpoint.com/threads/usb-tethering-with-iphone.257542/

Specifically, download http://carlogent.com/KextUtilityFix.zip and install this after the 11.4 iTunes install. Back up the AirTrafficHost.framework dir and restore that as suggested above. I did just these two things and I am now able to run iTunes 11.4 and sync my new iPhone 6 as well as my old iPhone 5 with IOS 7.1.2.

I'm so glad I found this post, I've been tearing my hair out with this.

Same issue here on 10.6.8 Intel Core Duo.

I haven't backed up for a while as my time machine died.

Does anybody have a copy of the iTunes files I need to replace?

    Thanks

Its not just older machines. I can't sync an iPad air iOS 7 with a MacPro running 10.9.5. "Can't connect to this phone" is the message from iTunes 11.4

Not sure about this.  I have a late 2013 iMac running 10.9,5 and iTunes 11.4.  iPhone and iPad will sync when attached to the iMac, but will not sync over wifi.  This began this morning, and the iPad cannot find my iMac.  Is this a separate issue from the update problem?

    OK, its working!

on 10.6.8, 32 bit etc imac:

    - uninstall everything using appzapper and/or, manually remove the files listed above

    - install 11.3.1 from the image shared in the thread

    - backup all the files listed above

    - install 11.4

    - manually overwrite the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AirTrafficHost.framework with the one backed up from the 11.3 install

not really much different then when I tried before, but this time it worked!

thanks all... and apple, im very sad with you

Well,  just to add to the static about this. I hooked up my iPad air (iOS 7) to my older MBP running 10.6.8 & iTunes 11.1.5 and it recognized the iPad. Sync'd with all sorts of questions not seen before (podcasts don't exist, audio files not authorized etc) but it did sync. Wiped out all my songs and freed up several Gb of space. Huh. So I wired the iPad air back into the MP (2008) with iTunes 11.4 and it recognized it. Huh #2. Sync'd, added previous songs, and everything seems fine.

Have no idea what's going on...

    Good luck to you all,

    John

    This may help others:

ITunes 11.4 for Windows also had problems with all my iOS devices, greyed out sync button and/or a large amount of "Other" space. That is until I started iTunes with a right click and used the “Run as Administrator” option. Then all my devices worked.

Looking into “Task Manager,” when things are not working, the process, ATH.EXE is unstable and constantly being created and killed. When things are stable ATH.EXE is rock solid, one for each connected device.

“Run as Administrator” can also be setup in “Properties/Compatibility mode.”
