Q: iMac Performance Problem with iPhoto

Hi all,

I have a brand new Mac Mini 2.5GHz dual core: http://www.apple.com/uk/mac-mini/specs.html

I bought it for home to mainly run iPhoto. I have copied to it (from various sources) all my digital photos (about 42,000 images totalling 250GB). I then imported them into iPhoto by dragging and dropping into the main iPhoto window.

After several hours (in fact a day or two), it had imported them and regenerated thumbnails etc. The problem I have is that performance of iPhoto is painfully slow as a result.

I am an experienced Mac user and am writing this post from my 2 year old MBP (with solid state harddrive, quad core processor and 8GB of RAM). This machine performs perfectly all the time and has no trouble with iPhoto (library size of 140GB). So, what I'm driving at is the following:

Where is the bottle-neck on this Mac Mini? Do I need a solid state drive? More RAM or just take it back to the shop and get a different spec machine?

It seems a bit strange that, having bought an Apple machine, it can't successfully run one of their own software products. This is a home-use machine, running a home-use product - why doesn't it work? Any advice is welcome.
