Q: itunes 11.4 crashes when syncing apps to ipad / iphone

hey everyone, maybe the knowledge of the many may help, as I am rather at a loss right now!

after installing itunes 11.4, my trouble started! running 64 bit version on windows 8.1 - and latest iOS on both devices

all windows updates installed, all drivers for whatever is running on this machien are also up to date

connecting either ipad or iphone to computer, when itunes starts to sync, it gets to the point of "syncing apps to iPAD", it tries to add the first app - and crashes for good!

and yep, I went thru all the suggested thingies recommended on here:

iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717

windows pops up "itunes has stopped working" ... so I headed over to the Windows Event viewer, and for the moment, itunes crashes, I find these two entries in the log file - tried a search on here, google as well, to no avail:

I had the same issue. I read through all 8 pages hoping to find a simple fix without having to unistall and reistall programs, reinstall, etc. I noticed at step 5 it tried to update or sync 2 apps (1 of 2) and then it kept crashing. I went to both my ipad and iphone 6 and deleted the apps on each device. They were shaded and "waiting" before I deleted them. I tried syncing again and one app (1 of 1) app on step 5 was attempting to sync and then crash. I went back to my phone and the app was back on my phone? It was shaded and "waiting" again. I went into itunes, found the app and clicked "remove" it and hit apply. The sync then worked on both my ipad air and iphone 6 without an issue both wired and wireless.

I don't use the two apps that were causing the problem but for the heck of it I did reinstall them from the app store and sync still worked fine.

Hope this helps some of you

Yes i used this approach with success .. it got leggy for me given the number of devices i have ..

End of day i came to understand this workaround as just getting the apps syncd via wifi in such a way that when you do run them through iTunes it avoids the app detecting it needs to load the apps from the iTunes medial folder location .. this seems to be the component within iTunes that has the problem.

I have no issues loading and unloading movies and music during syncs.

I have also found that sometimes (on a windows PC) you need to logoff your account and back on (does not require a full restart of the PC) to clear up the communications between the iTunes and the device ... to get a proper reads on whether the sync is fixed .. this is just more step beyond what you summarized.

Good luck. Lets just hope for a release of iTunes with a fix for this problem.

I had similar presentation early in troubleshooting across all devices.

End of day the workaround i settled on did not require any device level actions just some maintenance of the apps. Deleted the apps from iTunes library and re-adding quite simple and effective for me. Still only a workaround and we need a fix from apple.

Slightly off topic but interesting article in todays WSJ .. "Apple Pulls iOS Software Update" .. apple released an iOS8.01 update early this morning and had to pull it off the servers ... just makes one wonder about how much testing these guys at apple are doing

    http://online.wsj.com/articles/apple-pulls-ios-software-update-1411584428?tesla= y&mg=reno64-wsj

Just venturing a guess but I would think the bug documented in this forum posting affects a segment of apples customer base that tends to own multiple apple devices and uses the networking and streaming capabilities of iTunes (ie some of their best customers)

My user profile has all my folders redirected to a domain server, all I needed to move was the Mobile Applications folder, not the library or the music files.  This was my solution:

    Restore device from backup.

During the first sync iTunes crashes, disconnect device.

Re-open iTunes, go to Library, Apps. Select all, Delete, Keep Files.

Move the Username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Mobile Applications folder to the local drive. (I chose C:\Temp\Mobile Applications.)

Drag all the app files back into iTunes, replace older versions if prompted.

    Sync device.

From my troubleshooting your solution should work but not sure you actually needed to move the location of the files. I think what you did changed the file mapping within the iTunes library for the apps .. from a UNC mapping (to your NAS) to a drive letter mapping .. by storing on the C drive of the PC where iTunes is installed would by default  picks up a drive letter mapping. You can back door into the same drive letter mapping on a PC (not sure about macs) by mapping a network drive on that same PC to your NAS (that store the apps .. usually this is under the folder iTunes and in a sub folder called "Mobile Applications") .. then do the same delete / re-add via the drive letter mapping   .. so once that library file has letter drive mapping v UNC then iTunes stops crashing ...

    Your solution should work also.

    Best of luck.

I've just finished installing iOS 8.02 anf restoring my apps to my iTunes library.  There are no problems and sync occurs normally.

I tried with 8.02 on my iPad AIR and iTtunes 11.4 crashed again.   iTunes is able to start the copy, but that is it.  There are a bunch of apps on the iPad that are dark and say "Waiting..."  Apple needs to update iTunes.  Downloading apps manually on the phone or iPad isn't a long term solution.

    Hi guys!

I have still problems with my 5S to sync with iTunes. It just cannot sync my songs, but it can sync my apps. What on earth shall I do? I almost tried ALL methods and I even tried now with the latest iOS-update. If you can give me any of advices, I would be more than grateful! Thx!

Odd, I have not seen this bug involve syncing music and I have syncd across a range of my devices including a 5s. In fact I had to rebuild a 5S that syncd 3000+ songs loading from my NAS via iTunes without issue (same iTunes app that crashes if i file mapping is not consistent via drive letter). The problem I continue to work around just involves the apps.

If I was in your position the first thing I would try would be to do a sync to this 5s and REMOVE all music. Maybe a more incremental approach is to do a sync with removing a couple of albums .. that way you are removing rather than adding .. seems the bug has to do with loading underlying files from the NAS location as mapped by the iTunes library file via iTunes app running on separate PC See if that syncs correctly. If so then do another sync and start to add back some of the playlists and or albums.

Another thing I would do first  fully logoff my PC, then back on and retry

    Best of luck

Thank you for trying helping me out! I have erased all songs, created new library, started to sync and still nothing. I have created a new library and then it suddenly looks like this:

    Bild1.jpg

It just won't sync no matter what I do. However, some albums can be synced, but they are very, very few. We are talking like 5 or so. Shall I wait for the new iTunes? Am I the only one with this error? What can I do?

First as point of reference ... related to my own troubleshooting around this bug .. I stayed with my iTunes install v 11.4 .. I did not attempt to uninstall or change it ..

Sounds like you have uninstalled and done some reinstall .. so you are in somewhat unique territory ... you may want to pay for some focused support to get you back to a functional end point

With that said I would first check to see if you rebuilt your library file correctly after you did the reinstall  .. couple key steps are first to set the pointers to your iTunes media folder correctly .. that I think is under edit preferences advanced ..

then assuming you did NOT delete the underlying music files .. you need to add that music back to the library ..

Once you do that I would think you are good to go ..

    Best of luck

One more thing to check .. after you have added music to your iTunes library .. if you goto the iTunes and upto the library for music click on songs at top task bar .. then look at bottom of the UI .. do you see the song count .. ie items and GBs ... does it look like all your music is back in your library?

Well, a senior technician called me and uninstalled everything from my laptop that was from Apple. He tried to solve this issue for 1h19min. Bonjour include. And I reinstalled everything back, that means also the library. I just hope he didn't messed up my iPhone even more! However, I'll contact them once and again so we can solve this. I'll check with another of my PC if it works. If not, then I shall be worried big time... Appriciate for your help!

My music is all there and saved in my library. It just won't sync when I press at "Sync"-button. That blue staple to the right is first "full", then it goes down again. Same issue over and over again, no matter what I do. Am I the only one with this problem?
