Q: itunes 11.4 crashes when syncing apps to ipad / iphone

hey everyone, maybe the knowledge of the many may help, as I am rather at a loss right now!

after installing itunes 11.4, my trouble started! running 64 bit version on windows 8.1 - and latest iOS on both devices

all windows updates installed, all drivers for whatever is running on this machien are also up to date

connecting either ipad or iphone to computer, when itunes starts to sync, it gets to the point of "syncing apps to iPAD", it tries to add the first app - and crashes for good!

and yep, I went thru all the suggested thingies recommended on here:

iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717

windows pops up "itunes has stopped working" ... so I headed over to the Windows Event viewer, and for the moment, itunes crashes, I find these two entries in the log file - tried a search on here, google as well, to no avail:

Finally Success. As the other person stated this works and its not bad at all. A few apps are causing the crash not every thing. Mine crashed and if you look close it will tell you how many. Mine crashed on 1 of 2. I wrote down the name of the app. I deleted it and the file from the computer and wrote down the name. I then synced again and deleted the 2nd one. Remember to delete it from iTunes and the phone. After I deleted these 2 apps it syncs fine. I dont use both of them but I am going to try to reinstall one of this. Hurry after a week it works.

Are you sure it is just a few apps.  I found that it was every app that was newer on iTunes than on the phone (so updated apps on the PC).

Can you now test by bringing a new app to your PC (or updating an old one on the PC) and then try syncing again?

One important note. The two applications that were crashing my phone were (1) SpeedSmart and (2) LegalTech. Well guess what. SpeedSmart does come up on my iPhone in the app store when I search for it but when I click on it to re-install I get an error the application is no longer in the store. Also LegalTech is a technology show and it was last year and guess what that application is also no longer on the store. No wonder it was crashing it was trying to sync applications that no longer existed. I hope this helps some of you.

Now SpeedSmart appeared on my phone it is not in iTunes on my PC and not sure where it came from but it works on the phone. So strange. Some one asked me to load a new app and sync and I did and it worked. At least for me it appears that the path to the network NAS device was not the problem. I am using the full UNC path and its fine. It appears that the 2 apps were somehow missing and it chrashed during sync but now its fine. I sure hope this helps others. I am using Windows 8.1 64 Bit and am connnected to an 18 TB Netgear 3200 Readynas all is now working.

I think you are just experiencing the workaround of having apps on the device and library in sync before syncing.  I think you will find that if your device has updated an app(s) when the library hasn't that it will crash again.

@garyr74: After your post I tried syncing with WLAN off (Library is on notebook as offline files)... I though, maybe its "only" connectivity problems... But I'm still getting the error... copying the new app to desktop before syncing works... We're having this error since two weeks... Apple?????

    Hey Guys,

I've been experiencing the same issue and what i've done which works for me completely is the following workaround :

    1) Backup all the necessary folders such as music, mobile applications and etc, or if you in a network storage, leave it there.

    2) Press Shift and open itunes

    3) this will prompt to either choose a library or create a new one.

    4) now create a new itunes library ( you can use the local drive or network folder)

    5) transfer all the folders which you've backed up by dragging them into itunes window

    6) disable automatically downloads for apps

    7) run a backup and click on yes when it prompts to download the apps from your iphone/ipad/ipod

What i did which was even better was to completely delete the mobile application folder and let itunes create its own folder. you won't have a problem with this as it downloads every single app from your phone/ipad/ipod. I like this option as it will only keep what i have on my iphone/ipod/ipad.

I've never had a crash since doing this.

The only issue that you may face with this is that because it is a different itunes library, when you attempt to sycn the music it will say it has already been sycned with a previous library and will prompt you to erase and sycn. What this option does is only clears out your media only and not wipe out the ipad as i've found out. If you have all your media physically out of the ipad/iphone/ipod, you shouldn't have a problem doing this.

hope it helps you guys. it may take some time, as it took me about an hour but the good thing is itunes doesn't crash anymore..

Just a caution for anyone that has added metadata to organize music and movies within their library (ie sort order, grouping etc,). Your suggested approach may result in loss of this customization and would need to manually re-add the metadata (album by album and movie by movie). Of course once apple issues a fix later you can try to drop in the old library file (.itl) saved off in your backup but I just do not know the iTunes plumbing behind the scenes well enough or time to test to determine if you will end up with further problems.

My approach and hope assumes apple will issue a fix for this bug and taking the less invasive approach (keeping my current library). Certainly if we are two months downstream and no fix then time to re-evaluate.

    Best of luck

well after I moved the app folder to a local drive I was able to sync apps.

but last night I purchased a couple songs through itunes on my 6+ phone, and this morning itunes on my PC would crash when trying to transfer the purchases.

so I copied the entire itunes folder to the local drive, and then opened itunes while holding the shift key, then told it where the new library was on the local drive.

that seems to have solved most the syncing issues.

it transferred the purchased songs, synced music, synced photos.

I still can't sync notes with outlook for some reason.  it says it is syncing, but just sits there forever... until I give up and cancel it.

So just leaving the sync notes box unchecked for now.

Just got mine to work finally.

    this is what I did:

    1. Copy apps folder from my NAS back onto the C: Drive music>itunes>mobile apps

    2. Go into itunes and update all the apps that need updates

    3. Delete any odd balls that force a crash. In my case, I had issues with Apple Numbers

    4. Sync iPhone 6 plus

    5. Victory

Just went in to add some apps back in and iTunes is crashing again. I did get 1 good backup but there is clearly something wrong with 11.4

Just a caution on your workaround. Presumably the reason the apps were originally on your NAS was that you had set your iTunes media folder location mapped to the NAS. Unless you have changed iTunes media folder mapping consistent with the C drive mapping I would think the next iTunes app update would place any updated apps back in the original location NAS location (equal to the iTunes media folder mapping and as side note the C drive location would have a copy of the older version of the affected apps). Additionally if that is the case then if you go into your library apps and right click .. on the new update apps the get info would show the mapping to NAS where as the previously copied apps would be mapped to the C drive.

From there, my experience was iTunes would crash as soon as snycd a device which had a lower version of an updated app (triggering itunes to load the app per the mapping in the iTunes library app get info).

Finally I decided to leave my mapping of the iTunes media folder to the NAS and just work around the app mapping per my previous postings. It has worked quite well for me. Not only general syncs but I had to rebuild a 5s and 2 iPads for unrelated reasons.

    Best of luck.

I had similar problems and I desintalled iTunes 11.4 and am now trying to use version 11.3. I had to reinitialize my ipad too.
