Q: itunes 11.4 crashes when syncing apps to ipad / iphone

hey everyone, maybe the knowledge of the many may help, as I am rather at a loss right now!

after installing itunes 11.4, my trouble started! running 64 bit version on windows 8.1 - and latest iOS on both devices

all windows updates installed, all drivers for whatever is running on this machien are also up to date

connecting either ipad or iphone to computer, when itunes starts to sync, it gets to the point of "syncing apps to iPAD", it tries to add the first app - and crashes for good!

and yep, I went thru all the suggested thingies recommended on here:

iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717

windows pops up "itunes has stopped working" ... so I headed over to the Windows Event viewer, and for the moment, itunes crashes, I find these two entries in the log file - tried a search on here, google as well, to no avail:

It worked on me for two PCs, so hopefully it will work for you.  It's a simple solution if it turns out it works across the community.

When I first moved my Library to a NAS I made sure to do it via a mapped drive, wonder when that went away.  Anyway went ahead and changed the Library location back to W:\Shared Music through the Advanced Settings in Preferences this morning.  It processed for a while but the location under Info for existing items still show the UNC path.  Noticed Reader just updated on my iPhone so I will have something to test when I get home.

Having same issue here - very disappointing. New iphone 6, attempts at restoring from icloud and itunes fubar, no apps sync'd.  Each time it hits the apps sync itunes crashes.

I really can't believe what a piece of the proverbial itunes is.  It's always been appalling, now its buggy and appalling.

So everyone, just tested with 3 different users with the same problem. The easy workaround is :

    - Map a network drive to your Itune library (if you have this problem, YOUR ITUNE LIBRARY IS ON A NETWORK PATH)

    - Start Itune by holding down the shift key

    - Change the path of the library to use the mapped drive

    - Close and reopen Itune

    - Sync

    - ...

    - Profits !!!!!!

*** If this does not help, you probably have a different problem (check the bug report...), look somewhere else to find a solution.

So far so good after changing from a UNC path to a drive letter for the Library location.  I was able to download a new app in iTunes and then have it sync without crashing to my iPhone.  You can also change the Library location within iTunes, from Edit / Preferences / Advanced.

    Hi,

Moved from UNC to full path, reset iTunes to use the full path and still crashes when syncing with all my devices.

Anything I am missing or doing wrong?

    All,

My current iTunes folder is on a shared network drive.  As I test I started iTunes holding the shift key down and selected "create new library".  Once iTunes started I selected all my apps i.e. *.ipa files and copied them from my network drive to a local  c:\temp folder.  I then connected my iPhone 6 and did a sync to get the Apps library created.  Once created I dragged and dropped my .ipa files from my C:\Temp folder into iTunes.  I then hit sync and all my apps appeared in my iPhone.

Looks like Apple have changed something in 11.4 that is not working well with shared network drives.

The best method I have found to temporarily get this working is to

screen shot your apps you have

sync new iPhone 6 or 6 Plus let itunes attempt it's app sync and crash

AFter first crash you should have all apps in folders grayed out with the waiting... status.

Now open iTunes and immediately cancel the sync before it causes another crash

delete all apps in iTunes, but keep files for later purposes or send to recycle bin or trash if you like

now redownload all of your apps directly from the iTunes store through iTunes.

if you cannot find some of the old ones then don't worry about these and skip them (They are part of the cause for the crash)

After redownloading all or the apps you really care about, sync your phone again

Your phone should now sync with out iTunes crashing.

If you like, you can now go through and find the folder and apps that have the waiting status and delete those apps from the phone

this method allows you to restore from backup and keep your folders and app placements appdata. If you test Facebook it shoud still have your credentials stored. Of course this is if you previously had them stored. the same goes for other apps

TRY THIS - IT WORKED FOR ME

It has nothing to do with network drives NAS etc. I have one.

In my experience, on both iPad and iPhone iTunes crashed when syncing apps.

Once it crashes, look at your device.

You will see some apps 'Waiting', or appear 'greyed out'.

You can either delete them from the device manually hold app and press x (best option) or if you go to the App Store (still using the device, not iTunes) and search for the app... install it. It will give you the option of installing an older version of the app.

Search your folders for ALL the apps in this 'waiting' state.

Once you have removed them ALL, it will sync in iTunes.

This has worked successfully for me on 3 iPhones and two iPads, so give it a try.

Itunes 11.4 with a  NAS drive and Iphone 6 and iPad,and I can't sync without crashing.

While I can get all the apps I need over to the iPhone through the app store, getting my 9 gigs of music to the phone is a problem.  Further, any solution that entails renaming the WesternDig NAS drive to a drive letter doesn't work since I have been using Sonos for many years.  Sonos never used to work with a driver letter.  I'll search around the Sonos boards, but I don't believe they have changed this.  What has changed is Itunes.  Since 11.4 I have not been able to sync my music to my phone.

My great fear is that Apple, being more like Microsoft everyday, will just tell us to start using a drive letter for NAS drives.  FWIW, they are a competitor of Sonos and have no interest in letting users work outside of Apple/Beats airplay.  They just might not care that the change in 11.4 ends the easy use of Sonos.

Any thoughts on how to get music over to my phone.  I'd rather not use drag and drop since I like the ease of syncing.

CopyTrans make a series of Windows apps which may help until A***e decide to get off their collective backsides and help us out by fixing the mess they have created.

Some of the apps are paid and some are free.

The two I am thinking of are both free.

CopyTrans Manager allows the copying and deleting of music to an Iphone or Ipad.

CopyTrans Apps* is supposed to allow the managing of apps (*not used this to test)
I am also suffering the same problem and it was made worse by the recent Microsoft update problems which caused Itunes 11.3 to crash.
On the eve of IOS 8 being released Itunes 11.4 was released and I was unable to replace my Iphone 4.
So when the Iphone 4 was unable to update apps I believed (wrongly) that it was Apple no longer supporting the Iphone 4. I was annoyed that Apple had shut off Itunes syncing for my phone and yet couldn't supply me with a new Iphone 6.
Over the next few days I did several searches to see if anyone else was having problems with 11.4 but found nothing.
I updated my Ipad Mini Retina to IOS 8 and the apps updated over wifi which solidified my incorrect assumption.
However, three days ago I discovered that (as usual) my update to IOS 8 on the Ipad had not taken properly and working with Sonos to correct an intermittent wifi problem I completely restored the Ipad and discovered that I had the same problems as with the Iphone.
Of course...... It's the perfect storm! Microsoft and Apple both releasing untested software which caused me to draw the wrong conclusions along with searches which revealed nothing because I was probably "a bit too previous."
However, I am a great consumer of audiobooks and in the month or so since this debacle began I have been using CopyTrans manager to copy and delete audio files to my Iphone 4 successfully so I pass this information along as contributors to this thread can hopefully work around the problem.
It is certainly simpler than some of the replies I've seen here which seem akin to sacrificing the neighbours cat whilst rolling up the left trouser leg and Morris dancing:)
    Good luck

After some more work on this I no longer believe that this is related to my NAS.  I went through all the apps that were getting "partially" synced.  I found the grayed out apps on my phone and downloaded all of them from the app store and searched for all of them in itunes when my phone was connected and made sure that "will install' was not shown.  Also had some issue was a deleted app that was no longer on the app store, but eventually managed to get that fully deleted.  This eventually got my apps to all sync properly and to stop itunes from crashing.

However, the above did not get any of my music to sync. I was getting "waiting for changes to be applied" forever in itunes, or sometimes it would just finish syncing without syncing about 1000 tracks should have synced..  For some of this to be cured i had to turn syncing of music on and off.  That seemed to work once but now it's broken again.  Would love Apple to just fix some buggy software that they released.  This is getting tiresome.

I have a Synology NAS. I do not think the NAS is an issue at all. My Nas is called 'Diskstation' - it doesn't have a drive letter.

As above, I removed the greyed out apps from the phone manually - the main culprits seem to be Find My iPhone Remote, Podcasts -

I just did my iPhone 4S this morning, removed Podcasts and Remote and the sync works perfectly incl. 50gb of music.

My iPhone 6 just arrived in the post so I'm hoping for a smooth transition.
