Q: itunes 11.4 crashes when syncing apps to ipad / iphone

hey everyone, maybe the knowledge of the many may help, as I am rather at a loss right now!

 

after installing itunes 11.4, my trouble started! running 64 bit version on windows 8.1 - and latest iOS on both devices

 

all windows updates installed, all drivers for whatever is running on this machien are also up to date

 

connecting either ipad or iphone to computer, when itunes starts to sync, it gets to the point of "syncing apps to iPAD", it tries to add the first app - and crashes for good!

 

and yep, I went thru all the suggested thingies recommended on here:

windows pops up "itunes has stopped working" ... so I headed over to the Windows Event viewer, and for the moment, itunes crashes, I find these two entries in the log file - tried a search on here, google as well, to no avail:

    I normally wait before upgrading for exactly these reason having been royally shafted a few year back when Apple released a version with a bug that corrupted my whole Outlook folder and caused me 3 days of work to resolve.  Had a hissy fit and left Apple for a while before trying again!

     

    I was using ITunes 11.1.x - Iphone 5 updated and synced with no issues, however with my Ipad4 it updated the ipad OK but when I went to sync I had the message that IOS8 needed ITunes 11,2 or later - grrr. Tried to download a version 11.2 but somehow managed to get 11.4 and its related issues Crashed and froze on every attempt to sync even without any app changes .

     

    SO as mentioned earlier by Glowfish, I deleted ITunes and downloaded 11.3 and viola all is well again.

     

    Although apple seem to design amazing physical things the software side lacks considerably when you consider the man hours taken to resolve stuff that really should be sorted.

    Don't get me started on the photo side of things!!!!

    I tried uninstalling 11.4 and installing 11.3 and I still got the same error messages.  Maybe I need to try uninstalling all apple products as glowfish mentioned, but this is getting old...

    Same problem.  All my media is on a NAS and cant move it.  I'm in the process of restoring my my pc instead of the uninstall/reinstall. Im hoping that works.  Has anyone tried to activate a new iphone 6 with the iTunes 11.3?  Im guessing you need iTunes 11.4 or later.

    I didn't try older iTunes because I figured it wouldn't work with iPhone 6.

    I resorted to iCloud backup in the end and that's worked out ok now

    nope, not so far, I handed in my data, including log files from event viewer thursday evening (my local time), and the 2nd level tech support told me to expect at least 48 hours of waiting time before I get a reply .. I guess it all depends if someone will look on it this saturday, otherwise, no news before next week, I guess

    Having the same problem.  Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64, iTunes 11.4, library stored on a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo RND2000 with a pair of 2TB drives, RAID 1.  I backed up my iPhone 5 and tried to restore to my new iPhone 6.  Itunes crashed when trying to sync apps.  I tried multiple times, changed from UNC path to drive mapping, etc and no luck.  Called Apple, and am at their Tier 2 support...who thinks my "strange" configuration isn't compatible with iTunes...though I haven't had a problem for years with this configuration and the only change was an update to iTunes 11.4.  I tried different USB ports, rebooting everything in my environment, etc, no luck.  I also tried backing up my wifes iPhone 5 and restoring to her new iPhone 6.  Same problem, as soon as apps start to sync itunes crashes.  So, nothing is different in my environment and I've tried on 2 sets of iPhones...the only thing that MUST be wrong is iTunes 11.4.

     

    Ultimately I backed up MY iphone to iCloud and restored.  That got my apps and settings ok, but no music.  So I plugged into my computer and lo and behold my music is syncing just fine.  So it appears the only problem is with syncing of apps.  The thing that stinks is I had to upgrade to more storage to back up my wifes phone, just so I can then restore it and sync with my computer.

     

    So hopefully anyone that is going through what I am right now can at least upgrade and use your shiny new iPhone 6.  Worst case just bite the bullet and back up to iCloud (for now, even if you have to buy some storage...at least 20GB is only .99), restore from iCloud, then sync your phone.  Otherwise wait for Apple to come up with a solution I guess, but I wouldn't hold my breath to have anything today.

    Again, I agree that this is an introduced problem with ITunes 11.4 being unable to resolve the pathway to the "remote applications" subdirectory of the "My Music" folder on everyone's NAS.  Even though previous versions of ITunes did this exact task successfully.

     

    A workaround, which might not be available to everyone, is to:

     

    1)     Copy your ITunes library off your NAS and onto a location on a local hard disk  (In my case, a 1TB internal drive)

    2)     Go to Edit - > Preferences in ITunes and, under 'Advanced' make this new, local copy of your Library your active library

    3)     Go to your original Library on your NAS and delete/move out all of the files in the "Mobile Applications" subfolder.  This is so ITunes cannot in any way reference them

    4)     Attach each iOS8 device to your computer, one at a time.  If your ITunes setting is such that it tries to immediately sync your device, I suggest cancelling out of the sync right after the backup (Step 2 in the sync)

    5)     Highlight the device in the ITunes 'SideBar' and right click on the device name.  Choose "Transfer Purchases."  This copies every application that is on your device to your new, Local ITunes library

    6)     After that, fully sync the device.  It should progress all the way through completion without crashing.

    7)     To double check, as I did, download some 'App Updates" in ITunes and then re-sync.  The updated App files will go into your new, local Library.  The sync should now update the app on your device as normal.  Also test by installing a new App, either one in your new, local library, or one you purchase, onto your device and sync.  Should also work.

     

    After implementing this workaround, was able to get my Iphone 6+ up and running with the backups made with these now successful syncs.

     

    Ultimately, when Apple patches this bug, I intend to re-migrate my ITunes Library back to my NAS, because that's such a more efficient architecture for storing media, etc.

     

    Until then, I will have to make due with my ITunes library being on a local drive.

    Had this exact problem.

    The bonjour service was disabled on my PC.

    Enabled and started the Bonjour service.

    Started iTunes and it worked for the first time in a week.

    Been working fine all day so far.

    Doubt that everyone's problem will be fixed by this but worth checking that the Bonjour service is running as this has resolved the problem for me.

    Copying from a NAS to local storage may not be an option for everyone, myself included.  My PC has 2 500GB drives but my NAS has 2 2TB drives.  My library is too big to fit in the available space I have, plus it isn't redundant like my NAS is and I have music purchased outside of iTunes, family photos for the past 10 years, movies, etc all backed up on my NAS and from there to Crashplan.  Copying my entire library to another drive would take a considerable amount of time, and then leaving it in the state means my media library isn't on redundant drives anymore.

     

    Bottom line is this needs to get fixed.  I managed to find a reasonably easy work around for now.  I have submitted logs, etc to Apple and described my environment in great detail so hopefully that will help them narrow in on what is going on.  My hope is that this is a bug and not them clamping down on storing apps for legitimate use on redundant storage solutions.

    I have the same issue with the app crashing.  The event log in Windows 7 shows the MSVCR100.dll as the file causing the error.  I also have another crash as well.  When downloading app updates from the store crashes itunes 11.4 as well with the itunes.dll causing the crash.  Going through the event viewer bonjour is constantly crashing with this error: handle_resolve_request bad interfaceindex ##  where ## is the number of crashes.  Mine is on count 24.  Other information, my library is stored on my server and accessed through network location and not a mapped drive.  Turning off simultaneous downloads allowed me to download all app updates without crashing the app.  I have not had any issues with the OS X version of itunes which is what I ysed to restore my phone when windows itunes crashed.  I hope Apple updates itunes to fix this issue soon as it seems from all the posts here the error lies with storing a library on a network location.

    Update:  Syncing over wifi works so far.  Transferring apps from the phone is working and I'll test sending updated apps to the phone next app update.

    We are also having this issue (Work). We have the Itunes library over a DFS share (folder re-direct for the user profiles) This would be similar to having  the files stored over a Mapped drive. We have had this issue for a long time with the PhotoStream crashing because the users profiles stored on a Network location.

     

    Checking the event viwer I now see the same errors with iTunes 11.4 that we get with the PhotStream.

    Also I can see a lot of Bonjour errors like this.

    Now that we have iPhone 6's were having a "great day" trying to sync any apps.

     

    I hope an update is in the works as the workaround given is not workable.

    Apple need to have a Windows Beta not just for there Apple software.
