Q: Recently upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.9.4 and VERY slow now

Hi Apple support,

I'm using a 2009 MacBook Pro and recently had to upgrade from 10.6.8 to 10.9.4 for some newer software to work.  Now the computer is running very slow; applications constantly getting hung up, web pages taking a long time to load, etc.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

From comments on these forums, it seems that 4gb is at the low end of required RAM for running Mavericks at a reasonable speed.

You could try quitting any apps that you are not using at that moment, only opening and closing apps as you require them to see if that helps.

You may benefit from adding more RAM. Both Macsales and Crucial are good places to buy:

Same thing happened to me with my Mac Pro (early 2008) when I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion for the same reason - new software required at least 10.7.  It was a complete disaster.  Crashes, hangs, apps taking forever to load, startup time worse than a PC, etc.  Once things loaded, it was still lightening fast, but often hung and needed to be forced to quit.  Reading the fine print in the Mountain Lion system requirements, it turned out that Mountain Lion required a late 2009 vintage hardware configuration.  Could not revert back to Snow Leopard.  Apple told me it was a good thing that I didn't upgrade all the way to Mavericks because that probably would have killed my Mac Pro.  Bottom line is that you're probably at the upper limit of what your MacBook Pro hardware can handle.  I wound up buying a new Mac Pro.  Migration was a nightmare, but I have a 95% solution after a month or so of trips back to the Apple Store, online chats with Apple Support, and a few phone calls.  I'm wiping my old one and reinstalling Snow Leopard from scratch so I can at least sell the boat anchor to an unsuspecting boat owner...

I had 20 GB of RAM and still had the problem.  See my post a few minutes ago.

Spotlight is probably reindexing your entire system. Or alternatively, the index may be corrupt. Drag your entire disk into the Spotlight Privacy tab and then remove it. This will force Spotlight to reindex. After this please wait. Also repair disk permissions, verify disk (that's just always a good practice).

I had similar issues when I bought an MBP last week with 8GB RAM. It was running slow (as expected) on a new OS X (Yosemite in my case). Not to worry. You can open the MBP and upgrade the RAM very easily and without voiding your warranty. RAM is available everywhere but I got mine at macsales (dot) com (no affiliation, btw). Once I pushed in 16GB RAM and swapped out my disk for an SSD (solid state disk), the system flies. You could look at my other response on indexing to see if that will help but the RAM upgrade is your most likely path to happiness (imho).

    Good Luck

BTW  - The vendor I recommended also sells a special tool required to open the screws in your MBP.

You're right - Spotlight is reindexing my system.  Does that appreciably slow down the system until the reindexing is complete?  I am also looking into upgrading the RAM per your and other's suggestion.

    It makes a noticeable difference.

Your Mac will take 8GB, and that is a good thing

Thanks!  Just looked into upgrading to 8GB of RAM and will see if that does the trick.

Yikes!  I'm going to first try to upgrade my RAM and see if that does the trick.  Otherwise I may be in the same boat as you and have to get a new machine. Thanks for your replies.
