This is the error message I get when I try to sync with iTunes now. I suspect the problem is that I replaced my hard drive on my MBP, but I can't find this particular problem or the solution anywhere. Help?

I just had the exact same message when I plugged my iPhone 4 into my mac OS X 10.9.5. It had been syncing fine (almost daily) for months. My phone is ios 7.1.2. When I went into the phone's Settings> iTunes ("Music") I noticed the Home Sharing was turned off somehow. When I clicked it, it asked me for my Apple password and once I entered it, my phone showed up in my computer iTunes and now all is well.

Spot on. I checked my iTunes settings on the phone and sure enough, home sharing was disabled, and logging in with my Apple ID to it solved the "can't connect to device".

I wish Apple made straightforward error messages like "you have purchased content on your device and if you want to connect another device we have to make sure both of them are authorized to share this content, otherwise **** off and give us more money.".
