So I originally recorded a region of notes using smart strings. I can switch the instrument on the track and for most instruments it will play as that selected instrument.
But for some instruments, such as choir, the region of notes will not play?
Are some recorded notes not compatible with all instruments?

Yes, that can happen, if the notes are in a register that the instruments cannot play. You can check the notes that an instrument can play by moving the notes up and down in the track editor piano roll.

Oddly, I can actually play the note if I press the piano roll key adjacent to the recorded note. But if I press the recorded note itself, it does not play.
So it seems to be in the right place on the piano roll? I've experimented by moving the notes up and down on the roll, but no matter where I put them I dont hear anything.
Do the notes have a different velocity value from other notes? On some instruments, i.e. from the Jam Packs, do some velocity values change the articulation of the instrument.
As a test:
Enter exactly the same notes again from musical typing or by command-clicking the piano roll. Do your replicated notes play or not?
I played with the velocity setting for individual notes to see if that helps but no luck.
Also if I copy and paste the notes into another track, it still does not play. But if I manually type out the same notes it will play fine.
I should add that this was originally an imported iPad project. I'm wondering if it's a known compatibility issue?

GarageBand Mac does not have theSmart Strings. So the Smart Instrument regions will be converted to the closest possible match to create the sound. his will only be possible by adding automations to produce articulations that may not be available for other instruments. Check carefully, if there are any modulations active in the midi draw area.

I do have an option for smart strings under Orchestral->Strings->Smart strings.
What I don't see however is the breakdown between violin,cello, etc that you get with iPad garageband.
What I actually did, I recorded one track with violin, another with cello on my iPad. I then imported the project into mac garageband, and then tried to
change one of those two tracks to choir. No sound will play.
