Q: Slow Mac - EtreCheck

Hi Guys,

First of all, much gratitude to the developer of EtreCheck.app. Amazing stuff!

Secondly, I'm having trouble trying to find out what exactly is slowing down my machine. Here's the data from EtreCheck. Thank you!

More RAM would help. The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

In addition to Eric Root's comments…

These items are running 'kernel extensions'. They modify the OS at a very low level you must remove them correctly or upgrade them to 10.9 compatible versions.

    • Soundflower is very old (from 2010).

Update or remove it - the Installer may have an uninstaller - check the download)

    https://code.google.com/p/soundflower/downloads/list

    • Virtualbox is also very old (2010 again) - Update or remove it if you don't use it.

    https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

VMWare has a system level background job that is failing - ensure that app is up to date & is 10.9 compatible. If the job doesn't start to work after cleaning & rebooting consider removing it.

I'd second Eric's suggestion to remove all the Blackberry software, there is removal info on these forums search here if you can't see a clear way to uninstall it.

Also make sure ALL the user login items are compatible with 10.9, or update them. They all run when you login - try another user account to see if that is better.

I suspect you could delete all the login items & slowly add back the ones you need - running them all will not help the limited RAM.

You have two old dotmac background jobs, you can delete them from ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert…

(To open the hidden user library – hold alt, click the Finders Go Menu > select Library)

    P.S.

I'm not sure you need to run a separate VNCServer? OS X has a compatible VNC server built in (enabled in the Sharing section of System Preferences > remote management > computer settings). Remove that so you have one less item to constantly update (old software can compromise security).

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.

For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

Much appreciated, Eric. Sorry for the delayed response, as I was uninstalling those apps I lost permissions to my home directory. Took me a couple of days to figure that out and fix it. My MAC is much faster, didn't want to spend money buying RAM cuz I'm thinking of selling it anyway.

Thanks Davis. You know what's strange? The fact that I had Soundflower & Virtualbox uninstalled eons ago. I use AppCleaner to uninstall apps. Clearly not doing a good job. I tried to search for it via Spotlight but couldn't find either apps. Not too sure how to proceed now. VNC has been removed, thank you. Hard to tell which of all these apps was slowing down my machine.

However, I do need the BlackBerry Link software because of my phone backups and all. I uninstalled it for now, I might have to reinstall it when I need it.

All actions on my MBP were super slow all the time, even clicking was slow I'm surprised all the hair on my head is still intact. I cannot recall the exact time it developed this problem because at some point I used to install anything I deemed necessary cuz I had loads of disk space.

I never received any alerts or error messages. As a techie, I'm embarrassed to say that I have no backup of my data. I'll need a HDD turned into a time machine for this.

Sophos may be slowing things down.  I removed that on mine and it became more responsive.
