How do I setup my Time Capsule (3rd Generation) to be accessed from the internet while I'm traveling?

How do I setup my Time Capsule (3rd Generation) to be accessed from the internet while I'm traveling? It is installed on my home network behind my TWC broadband router.

Tesserax remote access is this one.

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3413

This lists the standard methods.. if your TC is behind another router you cannot use BTMM and iCloud so you will need to use method 3.. ie port forward 548 to the TC.. and use DDNS to find your public IP.

That is unless you replace the current router with a modem..

Then the TC can take the main router role..

or you can replace it with vpn server built in router.

I have had the most reliable results using Method 3.

The following will work on most ISP provided modem/routers when the Time Capsule is operating in Bridge Mode behind the modem/router. You will need to check with TWC on specifics if they provided the modem/router to you.

Verify that you have a fixed, static WAN Internet IP address from TWC for the modem/router....not the usual type of IP address that will change on a regular basis. Expect to pay an additional fee for the fixed WAN IP Address. Some providers will only provide a fixed IP address with a business account. Check with TWC for details.

Configure the TWC modem/router to provide a fixed, reserved local IP address for the Time Capsule on your network provided by the TWC modem/router. An example might be something like 192.168.1.50.

Assuming that the TWC modem/router supports Port Forwarding.....set up the modem/router to forward the following ports to the fixed IP address on the local network that you have established for the Time Capsule.

Public UDP Port 8888

Public TCP Port 8888

Private UDP Port 548

Private TCP Port 548

To connect from a remote location on a Mac laptop:

Click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus are displayed at the top of the screen

Click the Go menu

Click Connect to Server

Enter the following......"afp://" followed by the static Internet WAN IP address of your modem/router followed by a colon ":", then enter "8888"

Example, assuming that your fixed WAN IP address for the modem/router is 12.34.56.789......enter the following in the Connect to Server box:

afp://12.34.56.789:8888

Then, enter the device password for the Time Capsule to connect.

Thank you for the response but I need to add more information to give a better basis to my problem.

My TC is behind a TWC router (Ubee DVW 3201b). Time Warner doesn't allow for a static IP address unless I change to a business account. I have created a DDNS through DYN.com although I am not sure how to implement this into the TC. I also believe my TC may be a 4th generation although I'm not sure how to tell or if it makes a difference anyway. My Airport utility version is 7.7.3 which seems different from any of the screen shots I've seen in any article. I've tried adding my DDNS address in with no result and I've also tried port forwarding in the Ubee router although I may not have done that correctly either. At this time I guess I'm lost and in need of help.

Ok.. since the TWC modem is also a router.. all configuration takes place on this box.. NONE whatsoever takes place on the TC.

There is no airport utility 7.7.3 but there is a firmware of that number for the latest AC model TC..

Is it tall like this.

Then it is Gen5.

otherwise it will have a firmware.. 7.6.4 or earlier and the airport utility must be 6.3 or earlier.

Open the Airport utility and give us a screenshot of the summary page.

That will also help us determine that you have the TC, which version and how it is setup.

You might want to press the edit and also give us the Internet and Network tab as they should be set correctly as well.

I have created a DDNS through DYN.com although I am not sure how to implement this into the TC.

You do not do anything in the TC.. set it up in the Ubee router.

Port forward 548 to the TC in the Ubee router.

And make sure the TC has a static IP in the Ubee router.

Overall if you find this too hard I strongly recommend you buy a product designed for remote access .. eg WD MyCloud.. they are cheap and easy peasy to setup for remote access.. by PC or Mac and since it is built outside of Apple you not bound up in Apple limitations built into all their equipment to prevent you using it the way you want.. rather than apple want you too.. eg BTMM and iCloud being the only way apple provide for access to the TC and only when it is the main router of the network.

You are fighting hard because Apple made this hard.. not easy.

LaPastenague,

Thanks for the reply, I will forward more info in the morning. I know you're half way around the world but you should have it when you rise. I may fall back on a product for remote access but I like a challenge (it's how I learn & I don't like to give up). I'll learn all you are willing to teach me as long as you can tolerate my slow computer aptitude.

Take care my friend

I have created a DDNS through DYN.com although I am not sure how to implement this into the TC.

You would implement this through the Ubee modem/router, not the Time Capsule which is in Bridge Mode. As LaPastenague notes, the TC is not responsible for port forwarding or the Internet connection on your network, so there is literally nothing that you need to do specifically to the TC.

It is the Ubee modem/router that must be configured to use DDNS, assign a fixed "local" IP address to the TC, and and then set up to use the proper port values......so most of your support questions will be focused on the Ubee product.

Specifically, you need to ask TWC (if they support the Ubee product), or Ubee for help to:

1) Setup the Ubee device for DDNS

2) Issue a fixed local IP address to the Time Capsule

3) Setup the port forwarding

I do not use DDNS, so I would not be able to answer questions about that subject

Let me post right at the bottom because I find the new layout confusing to say the least.

Thanks for the screenshots.. they tell me loads of stuff.

1. Your TC is not Gen3 .. it is gen5 ie if you look on the base you will find A1470

See tall one.. and flat one.. yours has 7.7.3 firmware which cannot be loaded to Gen 1-4.. only Gen5.

https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule

2. You are using v5 airport utility on a PC .. this is not up to standard.. it might work marginally but is actually wrong for that model which should be using v6 from Mac or iOS.

3. Your setup is double NAT and wrong.. We already told you that the TC must be bridged.. you cannot run router mode.

4. You do not setup dynamic DNS on the TC.. we already told you that as well.. in bridge the TC is dumb.. like a plank.. it offers disk access and no routing.. you cannot do this setup any other way.

5. All port forwarding and DDNS must happen in the ROUTER.. not the TC.

So start all over again.. put the TC in bridge mode..

ie

User uploaded file

And set static IP to the TC from the router via dhcp reservations. you will have to read the manual for that.

Then forward the ports to the TC.

Then setup ddns.. all of which is done on the ISP router.. none of it is done on the TC.. nothing.. zilch.. zippo.. it is dumb as board hard disk in a network holder. Nothing else.
