what is the best imac temperature monitor program

24 inch iMac (OS X 10.6.8, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3)

The cooling fans do not appear to come on, ever. BUT the other day after a shut down (normally leave the unit sleeping) the fan (or fans) came on apparently a full speed. At the next wake-up the fan did not come on. Did shut-down and and the fans did not work at the power up. I have always though that this unit has run hot, has never had any air flow and the top is always very warm.

What can I do to make the fans operate (settings ?) 2. are there programs that can monitor internal iMac temps.

thanks

iMac (24-inch Early 2009), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Be wary of cnet downloads page links, as there are several there which

DO NOT get you the software you seek, and can instead load adware or

other malware; you can check the outdated version iStat Pro version is

no longer available from the maker directly, over a year ago.

There are a few relatively safe/r mirror sites available that appear to have

the original size file that can get you a clean (as of earlier this year) copy.

While I checked this, six months ago, I didn't save the link because I have

an original copy in archive as .zip from the maker's site two years ago. And

then again, in the Lounge discussions I checked into this topic again:

A link I found in August 2014 that appears to have provided me a clean

iStat Pro v. 4.92 download (1MB zip) still works at this mirror...

http://mac.majorgeeks.com/mg/getmirror/istat_pro,1.html

{Test the size of the file, what downloads and opens, to be sure that's all it is.}

PS: the ifixit.com site may have a repair guide that could be helpful in

cleaning dust out of the cooling fan; however the fan may be defective.

Good luck & hopefully your download won't include spigot or other adware. 😐

The link to iSlayer's iStat Pro widget goes to

http://www.apple.com/mac/ as of a year+ ago.

The iSlayer source page(s) have been gone

for awhile, thus a few ASC discussions about

it had come up dry when looking that way.

Some of the softonic, cnet, & other downloads

simply give you a smaller file that then seeks

other malicious content; like a master key, to ?

iStat Pro 4.92 is a handy tool, sad to have to rely

on some 'unknown source' to see if it's available.

Yet the link I posted still works today.

{no guarantees or assurance of quality control

and your mileage may vary from time to time}

Good luck in any event! 😐

You're welcome.

The link to mirror will get you a correct-size download of the product

& when I used it, the content was also correct. Snow Leopard 10.6.8

is the last OS X version that iStat Pro 4.92 would work with.

If you get it, check the settings and disable the automatic update choice.

I have this widget in three of my Macs (all running Leopard 10.5.8) and

it provides a few choices and information not readily available elsewhere.

And also have Temperature Monitor from bresink.com. At times, the
content or sharing of sensors between iStat Pro and Temp Monitor

will shut down Temp Monitor; so run them separately. For Widgets,

I have one named DashQuit 3.0 that turns off all widgets, & frees RAM.

This has proven helpful in several ways beyond resource management.

Good luck! 🙂

Thanks, I Have verified that all my fans are working by temporarily setting the minimun speeds to higher value and verifing the air flow, also I can hear the spin-up. Not sure why one or all of the fans came on that one time but I am sure now that all fans are operational and that i do not have a heating problem.

Thanks to one and all.

Sometimes a reset of the System Management Controller may help

alleviate power and systems issues; or at least if not, it may be part

of a troubleshooting scheme to help find out what did/didn't resolve it.

However, there is no wrong done by trying the SMC instruction & reset.

•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Then, other items may be covered under the PRAM (NVRAM) reset.

•About NVRAM and PRAM

At times, odd temperature spikes may be related to system glitches or

something (software) consuming massive processor cycles. There are

some software items, such as antivirus scans which may do that. As

most a.v. software is looking for what it hasn't the tools or references

to find, that could use a lot of resources for not.

In any event...

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

Glad to hear you were able to get the handy & well crafted

widget utility from the mirror link, & it still works as intended.

My older macs with Tiger 10.4.11 and Leopard 10.5.8 like it.

{But my newest with Mavericks 10.9.5 found fault & generated

console utility log reports that pointed to iStat Pro as a cause.}

An archived compressed file was used recently when I did

a restoration of Tiger in my 11+ year old iBook G4 Mid-2005.

And the Late 2005 G4 Mini is using iStat Pro in 10.5.8; so is

the Early 2006 MacBook1.1 13-inch 1.83GHz coreduo. If I

get a retail install 10.6.3 Snow Leopard, I may upgrade MB1.1.

Thanks for the feedback + curious to know if mirror still works.

In any event...

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂

First, from your description, all is operating correctly. The fans run so slowly (~ 1000 RPM) that you will not notice them unless things get really hot - which you don't want.

Second, I tried a few and settled with 'Desktop Monitor' available from the App Store - Nice presentation (on the desktop), all the info I need, and pay once to use on all my macs. No control function, but I've learned to stay clear of that if the OS will do the work for me, which it has to date.

All the best with it.
