connecting macmini to Samsung SA850 Display - result only half the screen works - the other half says check signal cable digital2

I reconnected my mac mini 6,2 to the Samsung SA850 Display. The result was that only half the screen worked. The other half was black except for a flashing message "check signal cable Digital 2. It also does not recognise the modem password.

The information I found says the Samsung SA850 has 2 x DVI sockets and 1 x DIsplayport socket. You don't however indicate how you are trying to connect it to the Mac.

If your trying to use one of the DVI sockets then this means you must also be using a Mini Displayport to DVI adaptor. However with the resolution of this monitor you need to use the Mini Displayport to Dual Link DVI adapter see http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter

If you just use the standard and cheaper adapter then it cannot support the full resolution of this monitor and this I believe explains the error message.

In this case a cheaper option would be to get a Mini Displayport to Displayport cable as this is just a cable and not an adapter and will allow you to run it in native Displayport mode and this can fully support the resolution of this monitor. I have the SA850 and a Mid 2012 Macbook Air. Two things:

1) The SA850 has this weird mode that displays two separate inputs side by side. It can be a bit of a pain because the button for this is right in the middle of the input selection and power buttons. I keep pressing it by accident when I turn off my monitor.

2) Not sure which Mac Mini you're using but the SA850 requires Displayport 1.2, which is only available in the more recent models (i.e.: models with Thunderbolt 2). Although I haven't actually tested this out to verify it. So if you don't have a brand spankin' new Mac I wouldn't bother with the Mini Displayport to Displayport cable. You will need the mini Displayport to Dual Link DVI adapter if you want the full resolution of the display (2560 x 1440). My macbook air does not have Thunderbolt 2 and therefore does not support displaying directly through Displayport (I have tried this and nothing happens).

Hope this helps!

Bad advice. The Displayport cable should work. I'm using one now with a Late 2009 MacMini (3.1) and an Apple LED Display using the 2560 x 1440 resolution.

The OP identified his MacMini as being a 6,2 which is a Late 2012 model.
