Q: AirPlay Mirroring with a MacBook Pro

I have a new MacBook Pro and I'm not able to mirror audio or video to my 2nd generation Apple TV. I can mirror with my iPhone and iPad, and I even have the Airplay icon in the menu bar. When I select it, however, it turns blue for a 20 or so seconds—as if beginning to mirror—and then says "Could not connect to 'Apple TV'." I've tried all of Apple's recommended steps for troubleshooting, and none of them fixed the problem. I've even reset the Apple TV. The Console log is below; I'm not quite knowledgable enough to interpret what it says the problem is.

 

Any help would be really appreciated!

    Do you have iTunes on the new computer?  

    Have you turned on "home sharing" on the computer?  

    Do so with the same Apple ID used for the Apple tv

     

    now try from the Apple TV to connect to the new computer.  on the second row far right is the computers icon.   click and you should be able to connect.

    Thanks for the response. I should have said that I have tried that. Both the computer and the Apple TV have home sharing on and signed into the same account, but still getting a "Could not connect to Apple TV" message...

    I can confirm the error with my audio setup via Airport Express (latest). Do you have third party Airplay tools like "AirDisplay" or "Airfoil" installed?

    I don't have "AirDisplay", "AirFoil" or "AirParrot" installed. That's what's so strange about this, I think. This is essentially a new machine. A few 3rd party apps (Mailbox, Chrome, TweetBot, Scrivener), but none that would seem to interact with AirPlay.

    Overnight, I installed the Yosemite Beta and AirPlay works. Not sure if that's a solution...

     

    The more I thought about this and looked around, it seems to be an error associated with coreaudiod.

    Hi - I've had this issue with my MacBook Pro since the last update a few months ago.  When I try to connect the AirPlay icon turns blue for about 20 seconds and then says that it is unable to connect.  I've tried all kinds of suggestions and nothing worked (no "AirDisplay" or "AirParrot" etc installed).  My AppleTV was working and I was able to play video on the TV when I used my iPhone. I also could play music from my iTunes on the TV screen from my MacBook -- just no mirroring. 

     

    I just worked it out with Apple Support.  It's a simple fix and I'm surprised they are not bothering to put it out on the forums as many users seem to be having this issue.  Go into System Preferences > Security & Privacy.  Click "Firewall" and try turning it off.  Now try connecting to AirPlay.  This fixed the problem for me (but a partial fix as I don't want to leave my firewall turned off).  Now click on "Firewall Options."  In the list "coreaudiod" had "Block incoming connections" selected.  I changed it to "Allow incoming connections" and then turned my firewall back on.  At that point, I reconnected to Airplay and it worked right away.

     

    Hope that this is helpful to you and to the many others who seem to be having issues with AirPlay Mirroring.  It's been driving me crazy for months but it's fixed now.
