No one knows the reason currently, not even the Japanese. Most news sources are suspecting it's due to the disgustingly low yen right now and to prevent themselves from losing so much money they're deciding on a new price to launch it at. Also, the law was passed for unlocking phones in Japan. From May of next year, most people, if out of plan, will be able to get their phones unlocked for free or for a small fee.

Can someone confirm this with documentation from Apple? On this page http://store.apple.com/jp/buy-iphone/iphone6 the iPhone is still unlocked/SIM-free: SIMフリーのiPhone 6は、一部の国ではLTEネットワークに対応しない場合があります。詳しくは通信事業者にお問い合わせください。(plus the longer explanation that was posted here before)

Edit: the page says that the phone is unavailable for order, although maybe that's because of other reasons and not because the phone is not / can't be unlocked/SIM-free anymore.

I am going to Japan in a month for half a year, so I'd like to know (with proof) why some say that the iPhone 6 is not unlocked/SIM-free anymore.

They offer tax refund too at apple store for tourist.

my bro just come back from japan for winter break.

yes. old iPhone are lock with japan carrier. that caused the phone is unable to use in other country, if you would like to unlock the phone, go to the store, provide documents to prove you are leaving or/and pay some amount to do it.  then only they will unlock the phone. (u can also call it un-tight/divorce form their telco and put in any sim card.

but ,the new iPhone 6, is a sim-free phone there. meaning you can use any sim everywhere.

I just bought an IPhone 6 from the Apple Store in Tokyo (when travelling with work). They told me that the I could use the IPhone 6 in the UK (where I live)

Back in the UK I caught up with my carrier (Three Mobile) and got the nano SIM card. However, the SIM card doesn't seem to work. The "no service" message doesn't disappear. Any advice?

sim free does not equal unlocked. Yes.

An online sim free apple store japan iPhone 6 plus works with any japanese sim.

The J apple store website explains that the phones will work with any carrier and that is the case.

All carrier sold iPhones are carrier locked when old. Apple online sim free iPhones are not carrier locked.

Like I said it says it on the apple japan website regarding sim free phones. It would be really easy for you to verify because the websites around the world are similar. just google translate the paragraps(s) about how it works with multiple carriers (note the company abbreviations NTT, KDDI, AU.) Or u could believe us based on our experience.

AS of May 2015 japan passed legislation to unlock phones, Softbank is charging 3000 to unlock phone, but supposedly only unlocks phones bought after May 2015
