First, what Mac computer is this for? Does it meet the system requirements for Mavericks? OS X Mavericks: System Requirements

Do you  get an error message when it fails.

I upgraded an iMac last week and any time I tried to use the Mavericks link on the "Updates" page of the app store, it errored. Called AppleCare--they couldnt figure it our. The error I got was, "The server gave an eror during download 503: Service not available.

My workabout: I left the App Store Updates page and returned the the App Store home page. On teh right edge is a list of "quick links":

Using the quick link for Mavericks took me to a regular App display page and I was able to get Mav downloaded and installed without further issue.

If Allan's suggestion doesn't work, try resetting the App Store and Clearing Cookies.

I thought this Apple stuff was supposed to be easy?

It’s always been effortless for me.

Perhaps you could throw out a few details like what happens, how far do you get, what error messages?

Thanks everyone. I am trying Allan's suggestion at the moment. It tells me it's downloading so fingers crossed. it did that before however and then simply said it had failed. It's a MacBook Pro which I purchased about 18 months ago. It died on me a couple of months ago.. Completely dead so John Lewis have had it repaired and brought back to life!

It's gone to sleep now so hopefully still downloading!

    thanks again...
