Q: Changing wireless printing when changing routers???

OK, not sure if I need to do this so asking to be sure. Right now I am connected wirelessly thru my Verizon router, and then Apple Airport Extreme, but think that is slowing down my internet connection but not sure if it really matters. I can switch to just the wireless router thru Verizon without going thru Airport (seems redundant to be using 2 routers) and connect on my laptop. But when I change to just the Verizon router I can no longer print wirelessly to my Canon Pixma 560 printer. Can anyone give me instructions on exactly how to change the printing options? I read that you select the Print & Fax option in systems but no Print & Fax in Maverick but is Printing and Sharing, but don't see anything there to select. Also, can someone advise me steps to connect wirelessly through a 2nd computer on Mavericks (iMac desktop)? I am not tech davy so need step-by-step instructions and easy terminology or I will be lost, but love my Apple products. Opinions on switching to the only-Verizon router option??? If I DO NOT switch and keep it with airport, instructions on setting up the iMac to wirelessly print also, or if changing to Verizon router same options with that router??? I love the help people are willing to share on these posts and appreciate any help I can get.

Go To System Preferences -> Startup Disk? Do you see a Snow Leopard entry? If yes, select it and click on Restart.

You do not need to setup the Airport again. Plug it back in and power it up. It remembers all the configurations and saves it.

Leave Printer sharing disabled, and connect to the Airport (not HW8A7) and test printing. If it works, switch to HW8A7 and test printing again.

This is most of the information (lots of duplicates) I see in AirPort in Snow Leopard:

AirPort Utility found an AirPort Extreme 802.11g.

AirPort Extreme Name: Gary Schnetter's AirPort Extreme

    IP Address: 192.168.1.3

    Version: 5.7

    AirPort ID: 00:03:93:E9:70:ED

    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

    Router Address: 92.168.1.1

    Ethernet ID: 00:03:93:E0:00:81

    Ethernet LAN ID: 00:03:93:E0:00:80

    Connect Using: Ethernet

    Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)

There is a tab for Printers and says "This pane shows USB printers connected to your AirPort wireless device." - There is "nothing" listed.

If this was not settings we changed in Airport, it was settings we changed in the printer/network/sharing or something under Canon because I did nothing thru Verizon or the router. It was settings I changed on my computer to set this up. Someone told me where to go and what to change and my printer started working wirelessly. I know they said they were setting it up to print from Airport.

In regards to that last test...leave printer sharing disabled, etc....are you wanting me to go into Snow Leopard and do this?

Also, if I do upgrade to the "n" router thru Verizon, are you saying that won't work with my Airport "g" connection? Because I am thinking about upgrading that router. Do I need to get a new printer? Any recommendations? Should I do that before I do a bunch of changes? I know Canon said one time if I get the "n" router it will work with this printer as long as the "n" router is "g" compatible...

If your printer is connected via WiFi, it will not show up in USB-connected printers. There are a lot of quirks for USB-connected printers. WiFi connection to Pixma is a better method.

It should have been on the Canon. You want the Canon to be available to any device in your network, which means it should get an IP, which is available via WiFi. USB does not allow that.

You do not want the printer to be tied to a specific mac, otherwise that Mac will have to be available when you want to print. The printer should stay on wifi.

If you get an "n' router but the VZ router is still left in b/g compatible mode, it will slow down the "n" devices. It is better to leave the printer on the b/g that the Airport has. If VZ lets you enable mDNS (Multicast) on the 9100EM (or its replacement) you should eb able to print from either the Airport or the VZ router.

OK, then so is my next step to contact Verizon technical support and ask them "Why is mDNS blocked for selected devices in the LAN, while the STBs can multicast?". Tell them you have Bonjour devices, and they [VZ] need to change the policy on the router to allow it on the LAN.?

I disconnected my chat with technical support. I don't know what I'm doing and they say you are wrong:

Gus(22:04:50): ok to connect a printer it is really simple

Gus(22:05:10): on the printer settings it will ask you how do you connect to your network

Gus(22:05:26): the answer to that is with WPA2 key

Gus(22:05:31): that's the password you have

Schnetter GARY(22:05:35): All I need is for you to change the policy on the router to allow it on the LAN.

Gus(22:05:40): we do not have a block on the LAN or WAN

Gus(22:06:40): I'm sorry but that's not how home networking functions

Schnetter GARY(22:06:43): I was told you do have DNS blocked for some devices on the LAN and I need to resolved to get this to work like I need it to.

Gus(22:07:48): it seems that whoever told you this information may not be a certified Networking technician

Schnetter GARY(22:07:54): If you can't do this please get me to a supervisor who can.

Gus(22:08:29): let me call you to continue assisting you please

Schnetter GARY(22:08:53): I only need this to be resolved per above. I know nothing about this but until this is resolved I can't connect right so I need this done please.

Gus(22:11:53): i understand what you are asking me

Gus(22:12:58): but the problem is that what you were told to ask of us has nothing to do with how a router works, if all you want to do is to connect the printer to the network all you need is the wireless key

    Gus(22:12:58): which you have

Schnetter GARY(22:13:54): Why is my DNS blocked for selected devices in the LAN, while the STBs can multicast? I have Bonjour devices, and you need to change the policy on the router to allow it on the LAN.

Gus(22:13:59): if you are trying to print from the internet at a remote location that is something diferent and it still has nothing to do with DNS

Gus(22:14:24): the DNS all it does is to convert IP addresses (numbers) to letters (like google.com)

Gus(22:15:04): the STB's do not multicast, an STB is just a video receiver

You can talk to them and cut-and-paste on entry from the STB and one entry which has the denied entry, which should help explain what you want. If they want to see packet captures which mDNS is being dropped, it may be bit more work, but we can show it.

On your iMac, connect to your airport SSID, go to System Preferences -> Sharing -> click on Edit button under Computer name, change it to some name. The screen would look similar to this.

    ComputerName-mdns.png

In System Preferences -> Network -> WiFi note down the IP address of the iMac.

From your MBP, connect to HW8A7, start Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal and now type

    nslookup TheNameYouGaveYouriMac (press enter)

    nslookup TheIPAddressOfYouriMac (press enter)

Can you post what you see as the output of the two above commands?

This should work for all your devices connected to the 9100EM directly or indirectly (through the Airport).

This is a Mac mini which has the following settings...

    Mini-i71-mDNS.png

Given these, on the VZ router (MI424WR) I see this...

    mDNS-registration.png

    And, the nslookup is

    nslookup macmini-i71

    Server: 192.168.1.1

    Address: 192.168.1.1#53

    Name: macmini-i71.home

    Address: 192.168.1.18

    nslookup 192.168.1.18

    Server: 192.168.1.1

    Address: 192.168.1.1#53

    18.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa name = Macmini-i71.home.

OK, I did the above and have changed it back now to the way it was so I didn't lose what was originally in there on the iMac iMac-0022412B1EA5-2.localiM (also, Use dynamic global hostname was "not" selected)... Terminal commands showed:

    Terminal 1.tiff

    Terminal 2.tiff

If I have to contact tech support again I need to know what I have to tell them exactly. They didn't seem to understand before. Am I telling them about the "Offline" status of some of those in my router? Which one is the printer? What do I show them is wrong?

    1. What happens when you check "Use Dynamic Global Hostname"?

    2. Both the forward/reverse lookups should work.

I did click on that so it looked just like the picture you gave when I set this up. But I undid it and reset everything back the way it was because I have to leave for work here in a few minutes and didn't want to forget how it was set up before. The above pings are with the Dynamic global hostname clicked and showing with GSiMac . Probably won't be able to answer again until later tonight if not too busy...must leave here shortly...What's next?
