Why won't old CDs play in iTunes 11.4?

Some of my cds from the late 90s/early 2000s won't play properly in my iMac with iTunes (11.4). My iMac is about 4 years old. This just started happening recently when I upgraded to OS Mavericks. The cds will play fine then either halfway through or near the end, it will stop, start up again, then the cd starts spinning as if it's reading the cd, then it becomes a bit difficult to eject the cd. My cds are excellent, no scratches at all. They perfect in my Xbox360 and PS3.

Does anyone know why this is, & how to fix the issue? Am I just better off getting an external hard drive?

iMac (27-inch Late 2009), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Another help source (if you haven't already done so). Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type cd.

Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.

You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up. At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle. This will bring up the Help Menu.

Your drive may need cleaning. Cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.
