Can I import an iMovie file into Garageband?

Hi, I want to add sounds, loops et al to an iMovie file. Is this possible and, if so, how to do it?

(I have a Macbook Air since March 2014 with Garageband 10)

Thanks for any advice.

Martin.

You can add one video file to GarageBand. Just use the command "Track > Show Movie Track".

Then add a movie with "File > Movie > Open Movie" and select your clip.

You cannot edit the movie in GarageBand, just use it for reference and copy the sound track to a different track, if you like.

However, you can create a soundtrack by adding loops and recording sounds, etc, and when the sound track is ready, write it to the original movie file with "File > Movie > Export Audio to Movie". This will replace the original soundtrack by your new track.

Hi Leonie,

Thanks very much for your response.

So, giving an example of what I want to do, in simple layman's terms:

I have an iMovie track of me singing and playing guitar. I understand that I can import this into Garageband and then add sound tracks etc; to it and when finished I export it to Movie. Will I then be able to upload it to youtube?

Thanks for your help and patience 🙂

Will I then be able to upload it to youtube?

You can upload the finished movie to YouTube using the YouTube Web page, or first import it to iMovie to add titles and transitions.
