The MBA serial number appears in About This Mac in the following locations:

  1. Just below the bold OS X on the initial screen. You must click each item beneath OS X until the serial number appears.
  2. Click on More Info… The serial number appears on the next screen under Overview.
  3. Click on System Report… the serial number will appear near the bottom of the Hardware Overview.
  4. The serial number is etched at the very end of the text that appears on the bottom, back of your MBA. You will need a bright light and good eyesight to read this.

Hello.

VikingOSX gave you a pretty accurate answer BUT!!! not finding your serial number is quite awkward.

If you say that some applications aren't working... that's perhaps because you OS X has some corrupted files. Very unusal, but it happens.

You shoul access Disk Utility and run a full diagnostic on you Macbook Air. If the problem continues, you shoul re-install your OS X.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider to have the problem corrected. Reinstalling the OS will have no effect.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Hi,

I have the same problem but on MacBook Pro (now working on OS X Yosemite). I know my serial number but it is unavailable. I found out about having that problem when I tried to use Messages and FaceTime. Also tried Blank Board Serializer but faced the problem when I wanted to boot from cd..

Can anybody help me, please..

Thank you

Anja

I was having the same problems and I took my MBP the Apple store. After a lot of investigating I found out the reason...

After updating to Yosemite, SOMEHOW the serial number for the mac was lost. You can check this out by going to the Apple Logo in the top left corner > About This Mac > Overview. Under 'Serial Number' it might say 'UNAVAILABLE'.

If that is the case then you will need to take it to the Apple Store to get it 'Serialised' under Target Disk Mode (Its free).

FYI - I have also had my motherboard changed on in 2010, I'm not too sure if that had something to do with me not having a serial number.
