Q: iPhoto won't open

Hi can anyone out there assist?

Was doing some file tidy up on my iMac (2008/ OS 10.9.4) and there seems to be a problem opening up iPhoto.

Suspect it requires me to deinstall iPhoto, and then to reinstall it.

Question:

1. will a remove/reinstall affect the 'precious' iPhoto Library containing my years of photos in any way?

I do have a back up on Time Machine should I need them in an emergency but have never resorted to this and am paranoid about the backup being accurate

2. I believe the last s/w update i 'paid' for, was 10.6 Snow Leopard, but perhaps I paid for the Mavericks update (10.9.4) I honestly cannot remember. All I know is I've kept my releases upto date. But, I am left confused as to how I could get hold of the iPhoto software (if indeed your advice is a simple reinstall).

thanks a mill for advice. ccding

exactly what were you "tidying up" and how were you doing it - do not ever use clean up software (like but not limited to MacKeeper - Do not install MacKeeper , CleanMyMac2 and others) to tidy up your Mac - they are not needed and often damage software and cause  dataloss

And you really need to backup your iPhoto and library and  purchase the upgrade to iPhoto '11 version 9.5.x from the App store and install it - IPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 is not very stable under Mavericks - there is a good chance that upgrading iPhoto will resolve this

s and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it? If it doesn't do the following to your current library:

1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.

    2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.
