You need a BluRay drive that uses Thunderbolt, USB3 or, if you own in older 2011 iMac or older, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800 connection protocols.
If you want maximum flexibility with a BluRay drive you need third party BluRay player software and BluRay burning/authoring software.
The only real BluRay burning/authoring software is Roxio Toast Titanium Pro.
For BluRay player software, look at Macgo BluRay Player.

Thank you MichelPM this has given me a head start. I have searching the net for some solid answers though there are a lot of info I'd rather trust the Apple Community Forum people because they use the stuff, they have actual experiences. I will look into the Macgo BluRay Player. Thank you, JKai
Glad I was able to help.

The SeaTech Aluminum Blu-ray Drive is the best and fastest blu-ray drive for Mac.
Dear Sir
I have an IMAC with El Capitan OS. I need a good blu ray burner to use it with Final Cut Pro disc image to burn blu ray burners. Please let me know what I should buy.
I tried Pioneer XDO5S. Not much luck.
Thanks
S
While the SeaTech drive linked to looks nice, I personally would not buy a bus-powered unit. Note that in some of the negative reviews that the Mac shut the device down because it was drawing too much power through the USB port to supply enough juice to the laser and other circuitry. Stick with a device that has a power supply of its own.
Just to throw an actual suggestion out there.
It's not the prettiest, or cheapest, but this drive from Other World Computing is the one I would get. They know Macs and peripherals for them. They don't offer junk. At $125, yes, it's somewhat more expensive than your typical $60-$75 bus powered drive, but I'd still get this one ahead of those.
