Q: Synch original iPad  with new Apple wireless keyboard

Sounds good but when I attempt to pair them, no numbers are sent for the keyboard to use. The  keyboard does not blink, either. Typing is not supported as far as I can tell. That's why I asked the question. No such problem with the new iPad mini, however.
