Apple Audio MIDI Setup not saving changes

I'm using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 for output (System Preferences >> Sound >> Output) connected via USB. When I go into Audio MIDI Setup and select this device and try to change Output format from from 44000 to 96000 2-ch 24-bit, the changes take effect but they never "save". I have to continually change the settings. Tried everything, repair permissions, verify hard disk which is fine, reset PRAM, reset SMC. I'm still running 10.6.8 for my main music workstation. Never have been able to get the settings to hold, not even with the previous interface I was using. Has anyone else had this problem? Any fixes?

Try going to your User/Library/Preferences and move the com.apple.systempreferences.plist to your Desktop.

Restart and test. If okay, delete the .plist from the Desktop. If the same, return the .plist to where you got it.

You may have to reset some System Preferences.

If that doesn't work, try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
