Q: Mavericks Install Fails, Error in Writing to Volume

I have a Macbook Pro mid-2011 which was starting to act a bit strange - unexpected loading indicators would pop up all the time, and the system response was very sluggish. So, I decided I'd like to reformat the HDD and perform a clean install with Mavericks.

After backing everything up, I created a bootable flash drive with the Mavericks installer, restarted the machine, and booted to the installer. I ran the Disk Utility, erased the OS HDD, and ran a quick "Verify" action to make sure the HDD was in good shape - Disk Utility reported that the HDD looks fine.

When I start the installer, the message above the loading bar is something along the lines of "Preparing to install. Your system will restart automatically." The loading bar fills all the way up relatively quickly (maybe within 10-15 minutes), but then it gets stuck on the final "One second remaining" message for maybe 15-20 minutes. After a period of time, I then get a unfortunate message along the lines of "The installation has failed. Try again later."

Looking at the installer log, I see this error message at the bottom, which seems to ultimately cause the installer to abort:

"Got an error in writing to /Volumes/Macintosh HD/OS X Install Data/minstallconfig.xml"

I've tried four times with wifi and ethernet turned on and off, but I get the same message every time. After the installer fails, the hard drive is no longer visible in Disk Utility until I restart the computer.

In my research of the issue, I haven't really seen this particular problem posted by others. The only other place I've seen this particular error is another thread on these forums from June: An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running the application again. No responses unfortunately! Any thoughts or ideas on how I could approach resolving this issue would be much appreciated!

I had this issue too when I replaced my HDD with an SSD. I tired installing 10.9, 10.10 and 10.11. In the end I installed OS X 10.11 to an external usb drive then used SuperDuper to clone the usb drive install to the SSD. I then set the SSD to be the boot drive and it all worked. I hope that helps.
