Mar 5, 2016 5:51 PM in response to MacUser-70by divingkea,I had the same issue when converting to Yosemite with an old Mac Book Pro. As other people in this thread mentioned it ended up being a problem with me having 2 step verification on my google account. Luckily it was easy enough to solve (without getting rid of 2-step verification!). I went to gmail and opened my Account settings (click on your picture in the upper right hand corner, then on the blue My Account button). Then click on Sign In and Security. Scroll down to Password & Sign in Method and under that look for App Passwords. Click on it. It will show you all the Apps you already have passwords for. Click on "Select App" Give it a name (I called mine "Messages") and click Generate. It will provide you with a password that will allow you to log on to Messages without the two step verification. This solved my problem and I have access....hope this helps someone else too!

Aug 10, 2016 12:25 PM in response to ourkid81by Ralph Johns (UK),Hi,
So what issues are you having with Mail ?Much earlier than the date mentioned in the Email Google decided not to use SSL any more.
At the time SSL (Secure Socket Layers) was considered to be one of the more secure ways to login in to web sites and severs.
However there was one of those episodes where someone found a flaw that could be exploited.
Most organisations fixed this and moved on but Google started using the OAuth token that the email talks about.
They also allowed people to still use SSL by a setting on your Google account pages for Security and setting "Allow Less Secure App"
Web page logins to the Google Mail server still uses SSL.
The Mail app has also done it for long time irrespective if you set "Allow Less Secure apps" or not.
However the Messages App using a Google ID login has always used SSL and nothing else and has needed "Less Secure apps".
For this reason it is not clear on my system if the Mail app to Google's mail server is using SSL or not.
On the basis that every other Jabber/XMPP server for Messaging using the Jabber protocol uses SSL to login (only Google are different) then I cannot see Apple changing this.
AS that would still only be one app if they did I can't see them changing Mail to use anything other than SSL in Mail (It works with every other server).
That would suggest you will have to enable Less Secure Apps on your Google settings.
Not that I have been looking but I have not seen anything that does state that Google's OAuth certificates are any more secure than the latest SSL ones.

Aug 10, 2016 12:54 PM in response to Ralph Johns (UK)by ourkid81,Hi. Have now used a few days to understand why I am having problems with to received and send email using my gmail accounts. I use my email accounts with gmail on the iPhone and iPad every day without problems. I had no problems using my email accounts with gmail on my macbook until before the summer. I use the mail program included in the operating system, it is called Apple Mail I belive.
As mentioned I got problems using gmail accounts on the MacBook (Apple Mail) before the summer. See the attachments/photos. After doing some research I found out that this was fixed by making the change "allow less secure apps" in the Google-settings. Is this featured here? https://productforums.google.com/forum/m/#!msg/gmail/LhWVrYZc_Eo/5EMpldFUC3wJ
If so, why have one of the most important and most widely used program for users of the Apple OS X does not support for this issue? How can I/we/Google influence Apple to fix this problem so that we can have maximum security? What are the consequences/danger by using the setting "Allowed less secure applications?
Will all this problem be avoided by following the "Mail (El Capitan): Set up a secure connection for an account"? Please see pictures. Can someone please give me a guide/recipe that is very easy to understand how I do this in case this could be the solution?

Aug 10, 2016 1:31 PM in response to ourkid81by Ralph Johns (UK),Hi,
Only Google use OAuth tokens/Certificates.
That means lots (everyone else) of other mail servers, Messaging app logins, Web Browser logins and so forth do not.
Google are the odd one out here.
Just because Google say OAuth is "better" or more secure does not make it so.
On the other hand sticking to Industry Standards can be a compromise based on the fact the more people use it the more likely other less scrupulous people will try to "break" it.
At any one time one standard will be superseded by an upgrade.
Google brought OAuth to the table at a point when this happened to SSL.
