Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.

For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

This post is to clean your system and the etrecheck "fad" is very informative for that.

1. First:

You have one or more Trojans that install adware: this has to Go. You must never download software form collective sites like Softonic, CNet Download.com etcetera: these sites manipulte the software installers to install adware or lure you to install "helpers" like toolbars and so on. In this case you have one Trojan probably by software that was downloaded from Softonic: one "result" is in the list as "zako". There may be more.

How to get rid of that: read on thesafemac.com. Never install malware searching apps, that run continuously (as in Windows), only scan by hand: there are two that may be useful Clamxav and Softonic.

Look through your Applications and Utilities folders to see what software was downloaded from other sites than the original developers site or from the Appstore. Uninstall those. Download those softwares now from the original site and install them. If you have installed installed tools like MacupdateDesktop or the Softonic App or such: uninstall those immediately.

Restart.

And do as recommended in the safemac for all that you found.

2. Uninstall DirectorShockwave (infected see thesafemac.

3. Open the Java applet in SystemPreferences and disable java

Once you start an application that needs java (old hat software) think if you really need that app. Quit it , enable java. start the app again. After use disable java again.

This may or may not solve your issues, but it is priority important.
