iCloud 2-Step Verification Recovery Code

I initiated iCloud 2-Step Verification but did not receive a Recovery Code. Apple's instructions say that you should receive a Recovery Code, but don't mention how it's provided to you. Kind of a stupid oversight if you ask me. Anyone know how the Recovery Key is provided? Anyone actually receive one? I know how to get another one, as that information is provided. I just am curious about the mystery of the original one. Seems to me it should come via my iCloud email....

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

I don't remember how I got mine it was so long ago, but you can replace it by following these instructions:

What if I lose my Recovery Key?

If you lose your Recovery Key, you can replace it any time:

Go to My Apple ID.
Select Manage your Apple ID and sign in with your password and trusted device.
Select Password and Security.
Under Recovery Key, select Replace Lost Key.

When you create a new key, your old Recovery Key is no longer usable.

Yeah, i know that.

I thought my question was pretty clear when I said, "I know how to get another one, as that information is provided." Best to read the post and only respond if you have something to add that is related to answering the question at hand. Thanks.
