Q: Upgrade from Windows 7 to 8 No Trackpad or Keyboard at Personalize Screen

I have been attempting to get windows onto my Macbook Air Mid 2013, OSX 10.9.4, Bootcamp Version 5.1.2, using my Windows 8 upgrade DVD I have. I have installed 7 through letting Bootcamp make me a bootable USB and it is working perfectly. The install went perfect and Windows 7 functions perfectly. I inserted my DVD and let it do the upgrade and it gets to the screen where you have to choose your color scheme and the trackpad or keyboard doesnt work.

I also went back into the Mac side opened bootcamp and let it make me a windows 8 boot stick using the windows 8 iso. I go back into windows 7 and load the setup file off the usb and it gets the the same exact spot where you can choose color scheme and nothing works to get past that screen.

I also tried when making my bootstick to burn the iso, then go back and burn the support software by itself and it doesn't work at all that way.

What am I missing here I feel like its something stupid. Is there a way to upgrade from 7 to 8 all through Mac bootcamp? I only see option to remove 7 or later in there not to upgrade.

Thank you so much in advance for any help, this has been dragging on for a few days and Im ready to be over it.

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

    1. Did you install Bootcamp drivers on the Windows 7 side?

    2. From Boot Camp 5.1: Frequently asked questions

Are upgrade installs from Windows 7 to Windows 8 supported?

Yes, but be sure to install the Boot Camp 5.0 Support Software (drivers) before upgrading to Windows 8. See Boot Camp: Frequently asked questions about installing Windows 8 for more information.

Yes I did install them but when i went to install them it only did a repair. Should I uninstall bootcamp completely and reinstall the newest version?

In the Windows 8 upgrade process it doesn't even get to the point where it installs Bootcamp, I think its after that screen if im not mistaken.

    Do not uninstall Windows 7/8.

Uninstall all Apple software and re-install the correct drivers. You have a Mid 2013 MBA, which requires - Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5640 not Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5621. Please click on System Requirements to verify.

    System Requirements

    • MacBook Air (11-inch & 13-inch, Mid 2013)
    • MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch & 15-inch, Late 2013)
    • Mac Pro (Late 2013)
    • iMac (21.5-inch & 27-inch, Late 2013)
    • Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1, 64 bit

Do I also need to update bootcamp on the Mac side? I couldn't figure out where to do it. And thank you so much for your patience and help.

    You have two options.

    1. Run Bootcamp Assistant, click on the checkbox only for drivers, nothing else. It will download the correct version to a USB, which will be erased and reformatted. Switch to Windows and run setup.exe under the Bootcamp folder.

    2. From Windows side, download 5.1.5640 zip file from the Apple website. Unzip the file, if necessary. Run setup.exe from the Bootcamp folder.

Downloading now and will remove all old and install new. Which way do you recommend best to install the 8 upgrade? DVD or let bootcamp make me an USB? Does the bootcamp in windows have the capability to do any of that? I'm sorry I'm so dumb I have always been a windows guy this Mac is my girlfriends and I am trying to get her windows on it for her MBA program.

Its not letting me uninstall Boot Camp Services on Windows, its only giving me repair option. Do I need to uninstall every single driver listed in add/remove programs prior to it allowing the uninstall?

I need to make every effort to keep you happy, so you can keep your GF happy.

    My recommendation is to

    1. Get the Bootcamp drivers in place on W7.

    2. Once W7 works as you want it with keyboard and mouse/trackpad, then upgrade  to W8. Bootcamp assistant is not need for the upgrade.

    3. While running W7, put in the W8 upgrade disk, and run through a normal upgrade. If the correct bootcamp drivers are not available or you do not have an external DVD, you may run into issue. Bootcamp Assistant will typically refuse to create a USB from an Upgrade ISO, but you can try.

    From  Page 3 of http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf

If you want to upgrade the version of Boot Camp or Windows on your Windows partition, you don’t need to use Boot Camp Assistant. Instead, click the Finder icon in the Dock, choose Help > Help Center, then search for “upgrade Boot Camp” or “upgrade Windows.”

Repair first and make sure the Keyboard/mouse/trackpad all work correctly. If the devices do not work correctly, you will need to remove the drivers individually.

Totally deleted the windows partition. Started over and installed 7 and it worked perfectly and verified correct bootcamp version in windows. Installed Windows 8 through upgrade DVD, trackpad and keyboard work flawlessly again throughout entire install until it gets the personalize screen where you choose your color scheme, once again nothing. I rebooted windows and it said Windows 8 didn't install properly and took me right back to 7.

I don't know if this is a problem but 7 isn't activated, I am using an old key off an old laptop that came with 7 that I upgraded to 8 a long time ago. I am only installing 7 real quick because my version of 8 is an upgrade. Like I said earlier installing 8 through Mac bootcamp with the DVD as a clean install works perfectly. I'm scratching my head here I really don't want to go purchase another new version of 8.

Is it possible to skip the customization screen, using defaults, and continue to complete the installation? It seems that the default drivers from the Windows 8 upgrade are not able to recognize the hardware.

If the upgrade gives you the ability to sit on this customization screen, start a new window, and install the correct W8 Bootcamp drivers, you may be able to workaround this issue. If you are using Bluetooth peripherals (Keyboard/Mouse), I would recommend using USB devices instead.

Cant figure out how to skip past it. Used an external USB mouse this time and it worked perfectly until it got to that screen. Keyboard isnt working at all on that screen caps lock light wont come on etc. I cant figure out how to even open a new window with nothing working. Windows wont upgrade my my upgrade version they are forcing me to purchase an entirely new copy of 8.

I also downloaded windows 8 this time using my product key thinking maybe the most updated version would work and install did the same exact thing.

Can you post a listing of the files on the W8 DVD? There may be a workaround that I can come up with, but the listing will help me decide. Is W8 64-bit or 32-bit? It should match the W7 bitness.
