Q: Upgrade from Windows 7 to 8 No Trackpad or Keyboard at Personalize Screen

I have been attempting to get windows onto my Macbook Air Mid 2013, OSX 10.9.4, Bootcamp Version 5.1.2, using my Windows 8 upgrade DVD I have. I have installed 7 through letting Bootcamp make me a bootable USB and it is working perfectly. The install went perfect and Windows 7 functions perfectly. I inserted my DVD and let it do the upgrade and it gets to the screen where you have to choose your color scheme and the trackpad or keyboard doesnt work.

I also went back into the Mac side opened bootcamp and let it make me a windows 8 boot stick using the windows 8 iso. I go back into windows 7 and load the setup file off the usb and it gets the the same exact spot where you can choose color scheme and nothing works to get past that screen.

I also tried when making my bootstick to burn the iso, then go back and burn the support software by itself and it doesn't work at all that way.

What am I missing here I feel like its something stupid. Is there a way to upgrade from 7 to 8 all through Mac bootcamp? I only see option to remove 7 or later in there not to upgrade.

Thank you so much in advance for any help, this has been dragging on for a few days and Im ready to be over it.

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

    1. Run Bootcamp Assistant. Uncheck the box for install/remove W7/W8. (Just the Drivers and build USB should be checked).

    2. Put the W8 DVD in the Optical drive.

    3. Are you allowed to build a USB? If yes, let it build one.

    4. Remove the DVD and the optical drive.

    5. Switch to Windows 7.

    6. Insert USB stick, and run the main setup.exe that starts the W8 upgrade.

Wont let me create one off of the DVD, only will allow me to create a USB off of an ISO.

Please see Disk Utility 12.x: Duplicate a disk, CD, or DVD .

You need to execute Steps 1-7 in the section Duplicate a CD-RW or DVD-RW

This will create a .cdr file (which can be used to create the USB). Select the .cdr file, when it asks for the ISO image.

Does not sound correct. This is what it should look like. If you cannot see the image let me know.

A .cdr is the same as an ISO, so you should be able to use it. I am not sure if BA will allow an Upgrade DVD to be put on the USB. I do not have one to test with. One option is to upload it to DropBox (the free version allows only 2GB though) and I can verify it as well.

Same thing gets to that screen and nothing. I did a fresh install of 8 off the DVD again to see if still works and it went through again. The difference was on that personalize screen there was a box to name the computer, on the upgrade install that's not there since its already named in 7.

Do you now have a working W8 installation?

I'm having a similar problem, but was able to get a little further than Kbishop28. This might work for you as well.

While in Windows 7, before upgrading, go into your Boot Camp settings in your system tray and set the boot target to be Windows. This will make it so that when your MacBook starts, it will launch into Windows automatically without you having to hold the Option key and choose an OS to launch into.

Now if you upgrade to Windows 8 and let it restart as many times as it needs during the installation (without you having to intervene with the Option key), your keyboard and touchpad should work on the Windows 8 customization screen. This worked for me and I was able to use my upgraded Windows 8 and even repair the Boot Camp installation as you did. HOWEVER, once I restart into OSX and then go BACK into Windows using the Option key, my keyboard and touchpad stop working. i.e. I am unable to get past the login screen in Windows 8.

So I haven't actually found a solution. I just found a way to get further. I have not yet tried uninstalling Boot Camp and installing it fresh (versus using the "Repair" option that comes up by default), so I may try that next.

I'd like to find a solution to this as well.

There are subtle differences between using the Option key and switching to Windows using the Startup Disk in System Preferences.

    1. Can you test via Startup Disk?

    2. After you remove Bootcamp drivers, you may run into issues with Graphics, Audio and KM issues.

      a. Please test Windows Safe Mode.

      b. After you re-install Bootcamp drivers from scratch, please post back if you see different behavior.
