Q: iOS 8 Update Failed

Just tried to update my iPad Air to i OS 8 about half an hour after it was released to the public.

After the iPad restart in order for my Mac to install the software, a message came up in iTunes... Says iPad can't be updated at this time.

Basically I can't even use my iPad now because it's stuck in recover mode. Cant restore it either, "iPhone software update server cannot be contacted at this time please try again later".

Really need my iPad for school tomorrow and all my work is in there. I have backups but still...

Extremely disappointed, Apple

    PhillyPhan,

If you don't have any problem with yours then what are you doing in this discussion. Shouldn't you brag about your iOS8 with your high school friends ?

Just consider how wonderful your life would be with backups.

If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

My girlfriend had an issue where her iPad mini freaked out and sent her into recovery mode and wouldn't let her recover it as it was no longer being read by her USB ports on her laptop. After some research i found little help on the subject as Reiboot and Recboot appeared to be malicious software. I told her to try plugging it into a different computer and hitting restore iPad after once it prompted. She did it and then it appeared as though nothing had happened until she hit restore again and it said extracting software. Sure enough it worked and iOS8 was already installed. In short, if you can, try plugging it into another computer and reset it to factory settings.

HI Guys! First of all thank you all who contributed to this thread. I was somewhat reassured that I was not the only one with this problem. Secondly, for the past more than 7 days I was searching through different fora for a solution and tried everything to no avail until last night. I have an iPad2 (wifi), my PC is running under Win7 (sorry about that). The error 3014 kept coming up until last night I switched off my firewall (Commodo) and Antivirus (Avast) as well. From this moment the installation via iTunes went without a problem, and now I am writing on my iPad :-) It is IMHO abnormal to have such requirements, but this how it worked for me. I hope I could help with this! :-)

    Hi everybody,

This is my experience that I would like to share with you, maybe it will be helpful.

I updated my iPhone 5 to iOS 8 directly on a phone, without using iTunes. Previously did full backup on iCloud. There was no problem with that whatsoever. But when I tried to upgrade my iPad Air using iTunes he went to recovery mode. Error 17 was my so called enemy. Tried to resolve it with Error 3194, Error 17, or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build" using Terminal, without any success, but with high hopes. Problem was solved in seconds using RecBoot. All data on iPad were there with iOS 7.1.2. I tried again to update using iTunes, with same results - Recovery Mode. Then I finally decided to delete all unnecessary apps with their data form my iPad, creating more than 7GB free space. Previously did full backup on my MacPro. Started iOS 8.0.2 upgrade and it worked like a charm.

First of all I want to say, I am a loyal apple purchaser for over 10 years. And now if apple doesn’t fix this issue I will never buy an apple product again!

I have an iPhone 4s and i tried to update to iOS 8. During the process the phone froze and so I powered down to restart the phone. The phone is now stuck in recovery mode for 2 weeks! I didn’t back up my phone this past month and I have VERY VALUABLE LEGAL INFORMATION ON MY PHONE that I can not lose. I tried tiny umbrella, and all these other programs to kick my phone out of recovery mode but all failed.

I went to the apple store to get help and they said they can not do anything for me unless I erase my data and do a clean restore. And that is not a possible solution. APPLE better find a solution! I have invested easily over $15,000 in products and software and have influenced others to do the same. If there is no solution, I will never invest in apple again.

If you have VERY VALUABLE LEGAL INFORMATION ON YOUR PHONE then why don't you have a backup? Why would you even risk a major change like an iOS upgrade without doing a backup first.

Why are you looking for anyone but yourself to blame for this? If the information is that important, then you are responsible for making sure that it is protected. What if the device was stolen? You'd be in the same boat. Who's fault would that be?

And this is a user to user forum, so what you do or do not do in the future is of no concern to us.

    Cheers,

I updated to iOS 8 about two weeks ago. Before I updated I backed up my device to both iCloud and iTunes. I also have automatic backups set up in iCloud. I also back up my Mac to Time Machine.
