running slow - maintenance ?

My Mac desktop says 184.94 gb free out of 499.25 gb - what does this mean - it a bit slow and have just downloaded mavericks OS X 10.9.4 ?


memory is 4gb 1067 MHz DDR3


can i speed anything up with an app ? i regularly reset safari and thats about it is there other maintenance stuff i should be doing

Generally, we don't recommend any speedup or cleanup apps. Some are semifunctional, but all are dangerous and can lead to reinstalling 10.9

But there are built-in things to try.

Try a Safe Boot - it checks out the hard drive as well as clearing some system files that might be corrupted because they are the most frequent ones written to:

OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

Use it for a while to see if you can tell if there's a change, then restart normally to see if the problem comes back.


There are a couple more free things to do, too, so come back if you need to.

have resolved the problem, as ever to a untechy person like me, there are always conflicting views - spoke to apple help earlier who advised that i should not have ran the safe boot ? anyhow its all sorted now and had a lot to do with some of the key chain setting not being recognised after the downloading of mavericks, thanks
