Q: Create apple id for a child - credit card required

I installed iOS 8. I turned on Family Sharing, and tried to create an AppleID for my son (who is 5).

No matter what I do, the setup fails, asking me for a credit card (see attached image for screenshot). I have a valid card associated with the account (on first try, the setup asked me for the security code, which I supplied). I have added this card back in on iOS and on my Mac using iTunes. It never accepts that I have a card added to the account. Which means I can't add an AppleID for my son. What gives?

iPhone 5, iOS 8, 32 GB

Have you considered the possibility of actually contacting Apple support?

What is it with people these days who are unwilling to do the simplest and most obvious things? This isn't rocket science.

No its not rocket science chick

and yes I have I have read through all their manuals on line and spoke to them which I will do again.

I take it then you haven't tried to set up a child account through family sharing..... This is a community forum looking for support not abstract unhelpful comments as was your last sentence.

And what did they tell you when you spoke to them?

You mentioned NOTHING about speaking to Apple. Are we just supposed to psychically know that you did so and what their response was?

This community is here for technical support. You seem to be looking for emotional support. That's a different thing entirely. Either give us all of the facts with which to troubleshoot, or go see a Tarot card reader who might be able to figure out what is actually going on based on facts you refuse to disclose.

I find your comments VERY rude and UNHELPFUL KiltedTim.

I refuse to go any further with your diabolical comments.

As I stated, as other have too, the problems with the family sharing and setting up a child account hoping that someone / anyone has found an answer yet as Apple only refers to do as the setup suggests.

So thank you for YOUR helpful Technical Suggestions to our Apple Product Problems which have been none that I can find.   And a Huge Thank you for the real Helpful Suggestions from Others in a similar boat.

When I have again spoken to Apple and If they suggest anything different next time I will post the helpful suggestion on the forum hopefully not too emotional for folks that can't take it.

Goodbye KiltedTim I won't be replying to any more of your offensive comments though wish you peace in this turbulent world.

Now sorted.  Had to change my card details in iTunes back to a credit card and entered the CVV Code in the family sharing set up.  Set up sons details in family sharing and we are away.  Have now changed back to Debit Card.  The original post is what I followed though originally when I tried it I must have inputted incorrectly.  Thank you for sharing the information dr. nixon.

This is really awesome behaviour of Apple. Showing exactly how they doesn't care for their customers.

Just go throu google how many people complain about the same issue for YEARS!!!

And it was not solved. They just care unless you don't want to give them credit card number.

Etics is apparently word not in their vocabulary.

It is a legal requirement to have to enter a credit card when creating accounts for children : Family Sharing and Apple IDs for kids - Apple Support

To comply with child online privacy protection laws, you will use the CVV or security code from a valid credit card as part of providing your parental consent. If the card on file is a debit card or another payment method, you’ll be asked to provide a credit card before you can continue. After you create the child's Apple ID, you can change your payment method back to a debit card.

Now... tell me how long Family Sharing has existed...

I also have this problem, and ended up creating an adult account for my child because of this ********.

What about the responsible adults who straight up don't use credit cards, as they are responsible enough to not get into debt? Surely there are other ways to prove age. After all, they let all of us create accounts as adults.. so why do they suddenly care now?

As has been stated multiple times, this is a LEGAL REQUIREMENT. If you don't like it, call your congressman. Apple has NO CHOICE in the matter. By creating an account for your child and falsifying the information about their birthdate, you have committed a crime.

I am in the UK: there is no legal requirement for us to use a credit card to prove identity. Many agencies use other methods to verify age. Surely all Apple needs to do is have the service provider verify age and use this as the token, as Blackberry did when I used to use their services.

To allow my child to have a phone so that he is contactable in an emergency, the only way to reasonably comply with Apple's policy would be to get a credit card, however this then falls foul of the principle of 'actual undue influence' meaning the contact could be voided in court. What then for the people who have a low credit score? Are they to be excluded from exercising proper parental controls just because of a specific law in another country? Surely just because it is a requirement in the US does not mean that it should apply to everyone.

I know that it currently does despite my argument, I just hope that someone from Apple sees this and rethinks their implementation. /rant

Until the day that Apple fixes this for their increasing non-US customer base, does anyone know of any Apps that can enact these sort of controls?

Exactly cac2008.  I am also from the UK and I do not have a credit card - why on earth would I?  It is an extremely poor financial decision.  And yet I can not setup id's for my kids without a credit card.  So apple want me to prove my age by taking a poor financial decision and getting a credit card - duh!  I have been onto Apple support and there is no other way.

Our household has over 10 devices so my account is becoming a little congested.  PLEASE APPLE, allow us to prove our age another way.

    Its not rocket science.

+++ for guys from UK. I don't care about US laws, because i'm from Europe. I WONT give my CC details to anybody, including Apple. If Apple succeed to have sales all around the world, THEY BETTER SHOULD listen to what customers are saying.

This is just ridiculous that i spent half of the day to figuring out how to make child account! and it takes few minutes put the fake b-day and you have it ready. NOBODY tries to check is it true or not. it's the same to ask to push to button and confirm if you are 18 years old.

Have 12 Apple devices on my family, thinking to switch to something really seriously (especially iphones).

    SO Bad

So you chose to commit fraud rather than follow the rules. Bully for you.
