ios - 8 where are the 'camera roll' and 'photostream' albums?

I see the ios8 had done away with the "camera roll" and "photostream" albums and replace them with a "recently added" album. Is there any way to get this old functionality back?

All I want is one folder that contains all the photos on my device and another that contains the photos that I'm happy to share across my devices. I would have hoped I could have create some smart albums, but albums seem to have to be curated manually.

I know I can see all my photos with the photos tab, but there are two issue I have with this, #1 the "collections" interface is horrible – I just want a nice grid of photos like in albums – and #2 my photostream photos are merge within them.

I now have no way of telling if I'm deleting a photo from the phone or the photostream, for example when I'm trying to free up space on the phone.

Would turning on the "icloud photo library" feature help? I would rather not use that as I don't want it to waste all my icloud space.

I am not suggesting that anyone switch iCloud Drive on unless they understand what that will mean to them.

Exactly!

@JonnyB

Some background reading on iCloud Drive:

And with iCloud Library Beta enabled you will no longer be able to sync photos to your devices using iTunes photo sync.

this is a good idea but does this need an extra space to create an album with over 200 photos? i mean if there were 200 photos and they get copied to another album, does these copied photos fill that space, hope i was clear , thanks

No. It's just create a pointer to the original file like iTunes with audio tracks in multiple playlists. A single song track file can be in many playlists but is only one file on the hard drive. It's the same in iPhoto for Mac and albums.

User uploaded file

So, basically now... the gallaries are gonna be the same. Because if you delete one photo from the iphone, you also delete it from ipad and viceversa.

This is stupid because i want to keep some photos on the ipad, but don't wanna have them on the phone.

AM I FORCED TO HAVE IPAD AND IPHONE WITH THE SAME PHOTOS???

what's the point in this???

This is so stupid. if you find any solution, please help.

PS: I have not activated the icloud drive yet.

You have regular albums and shared album.

As long as you do not enable iCloud Photo Library Beta, your photos are stored only on the iPad, unless you add them to a shared album.

When you create an album in the "Albums" tab, with "tap User uploaded file, enter a name, then tap Save. Select photos and videos to add to the album, then tap Done", this album is local on the iPad or iPhone.

Only "Shared" albums are stored on all devices,

When you delete photos from the photo stream, the deleted photos are removed from My Photo Stream on all your devices, but the original photos remain in Photos on the device on which they were originally taken. Photos that you save to another album on a device or computer are also not deleted.

I think Recently Added means (if you have PS "on" - recently added from any device. Not sure how many images "live" in Recently Added. There is also a "recently deleted" folder to show an "audit trail" of what has been deleted from any device. Ill have to play with this on my PC, phone, and ipad to see how it works.

"Recently Added" behaves like the Camera Roll in many ways:

That is what the manual says: (http://help.apple.com/ipad/8/#/iPadf8dcf211)

All photos added to your Recently Added album—including screenshots and photos saved from email, for example—appear in My Photo Stream.

Photos added to My Photo Stream on your other devices appear in your Recently Added album on iPad. iOS devices can keep up to 1000 of your most recent photos in My Photo Stream;

you can quickly browse the photos in Moments:

http://help.apple.com/ipad/8/#/iPad99c6ed03

To quickly browse the photos in a collection or year, touch and hold for a moment, then drag.

By default, Photos displays a representative subset of your photos when you view by year or by collection. To see all your photos, go to Settings > Photos & Camera, then turn off Summarize Photos.

right looking at this for a bit longer, it seems that the "recently added" album and the "photos" tab are not including all of my photostream photos, but only the ones that originated on my other devices.

Photos that where taken on the phone and now only exist on photosteam, eg that I have deleted from the phones camera roll, are no longer visible on the phone. I can see all the photos in photostream on my ipad (still on ios6), but on the phone I can only see the photos that where created on the ipad, for example, that are now part of the photostream.

In settings I have photostream on but icloud photo library off.

Agree - something is fishy here. Plus there are NO photos on the iCloud drive - I thought all my photos would be visible accessible from a PC or Mac - but no

Your photos are in your iCloud Photo Library Beta, if you enabled it. Other iPhones and iPads can see it in iCloud, but it does not create photo folders on your iCloud drive. Macs with Yosemite will see the the iCloud Photo Library Beta, when Photos for Yosemite has been released.

icloud drive is only compatible with ios8 and Yosemite.

Read http://www.tuaw.com/2014/09/17/psa-do-not-upgrade-to-icloud-drive-during-ios-8-i nstallation for further info.

So if you have other devices that are not or can't run ios8/Yosemite do not turn on icloud drive as these devices will loose all access to icloud data after the data is moved to the icloud drive from icloud.

I'm very upset.

this thing is no good.

I installed ios8 both on iphone and ipad.

So, basically now... the gallaries are gonna be the same. Because if you delete one photo from the iphone, you also delete it from ipad and viceversa.

This is stupid because i want to keep some photos on the ipad, but don't wanna have them on the phone.

PS: I have not activated the icloud drive yet.
