Q: ios - 8 where are the 'camera roll' and 'photostream' albums?

I see the ios8 had done away with the "camera roll" and "photostream" albums and replace them with a "recently added" album. Is there any way to get this old functionality back?

All I want is one folder that contains all the photos on my device and another that contains the photos that I'm happy to share across my devices. I would have hoped I could have create some smart albums, but albums seem to have to be curated manually.

I know I can see all my photos with the photos tab, but there are two issue I have with this, #1 the "collections" interface is horrible – I just want a nice grid of photos like in albums – and #2 my photostream photos are merge within them.

I now have no way of telling if I'm deleting a photo from the phone or the photostream, for example when I'm trying to free up space on the phone.

Would turning on the "icloud photo library" feature help? I would rather not use that as I don't want it to waste all my icloud space.

Plus some apps only can see albums, Flickr for example. So now with the 'camera roll' gone how do I add a photo that is no longer in "recently added" album? The cut off for this album seems to be as-of-today the 18th Aug.

Agree - something is fishy here. Plus there are NO photos on the iCloud drive - I thought all my photos would be visible accessible from a  PC or Mac - but no

right looking at this for a bit longer, it seems that the "recently added" album and the "photos" tab are not including all of my photostream photos, but only the ones that originated on my other devices.

Photos that where taken on the phone and now only exist on photosteam, eg that I have deleted from the phones camera roll,  are no longer visible on the phone. I can see all the photos in photostream on my ipad (still on ios6), but on the phone I can only see the photos that where created on the ipad, for example, that are now part of the photostream.

In settings I have photostream on but icloud photo library off.

Your photos are in your iCloud Photo Library Beta, if you enabled it. Other iPhones and iPads can see it in iCloud, but it does not create photo folders on your iCloud drive. Macs with Yosemite will see the the  iCloud Photo Library Beta, when Photos for Yosemite has been released.

icloud drive is only compatible with ios8 and Yosemite.

Read http://www.tuaw.com/2014/09/17/psa-do-not-upgrade-to-icloud-drive-during-ios-8-i nstallation for further info.

So if you have other devices that are not or can't run ios8/Yosemite do not turn on icloud drive as these devices will loose all access to icloud data after the data is moved to the icloud drive from icloud.

Fine - where is the "PhotoStream" photo album that could hold up to 1000 pictures? I have an iphone and ipad BOTH with IOS8 - I do not own a Mac. When I look at icloud.com from my PC - there are no pictures there.

    I'm very upset.

    this thing is no good.

I installed ios8 both on iphone and ipad.

So, basically now... the gallaries are gonna be the same. Because if you delete one photo from the iphone, you also delete it from ipad and viceversa.

This is stupid because i want to keep some photos on the ipad, but don't wanna have them on the phone.

AM I FORCED TO HAVE IPAD AND IPHONE WITH THE SAME PHOTOS???

    what's the point in this???

This is so stupid. if you find any solution, please help.

PS: I have not activated the icloud drive yet.

if you also upgrade with ios8 on ipad, you'll see that the photo galleries of new photos will "Merge".

it's as if all photos are put in a big giant streaming. if you delete from one device, the photo will be deleted from al devices.

basically, they removed the camera roll, and created a STREAMING only.

it's insane. i'm very very upset.

    I don't have a PC, sorry.

Photo Stream has ever be visibly at the iCloud.com web site from a Mac, only in applications on the computer - iPhoto or Aperture. And on a PC in the iCloud control panel.

See if the PC information here is still valid:  iCloud: My Photo Stream FAQ

icloud.com is not designed to let you see the photos in the old photostream - not sue about the new icloud drive and how it will deal with photos in icloud.com

I still say that with all of the "guides", Help pages, How To that Apple publishes - why are we left to "figure this out" by trial, error, share on forum? If you go to the "What's in IOS8" on apple.com there is no mention of this "new way" of doing things.

You have regular albums and shared album.

As long as you do not enable iCloud Photo Library Beta, your photos are stored only on the iPad, unless you add them to a shared album.

When you create an album in the "Albums" tab, with  "tap the add button, enter a name, then tap Save. Select photos and videos to add to the album, then tap Done", this album is local on the iPad or iPhone.

Only "Shared" albums are stored on all devices,

When you delete photos from the photo stream, the deleted photos are removed from My Photo Stream on all your devices, but the original photos remain in Photos on the device on which they were originally taken. Photos that you save to another album on a device or computer are also not deleted.

Yes, that is the conclusion that I have come to. What I want to know is is the photo actually store on the phone or only now in the cloud?

I holding off from upgrading my ipad for as long as I can. The way folders function in ios7 bugs me with the 9 app limit per screen when in ios6 I can see 20 apps at a time in folders. But this in for another thread. Back to photos.

I have done some testing and yes if I take a photo in ios8 it is both on the phone and the photostream. If I delete it on the phone it is also delete automatically from photostream. If I take a photo on in ios6 is appears on the ipad and photostream but I can choose to delete it from either location or both. If I take a photo in ios8 and then delete it from the photostream in ios6 it says it will be deleted from all devices but it is still left on the phone and just removed from the photostream.

I think this behaviour is just the glitchy way the various version of ios are working together at the moment with photostream.

I personally do not want my camera roll and photostream albums to be one and the same. I don't want to share all the photos across all my devices.

I've been an Apple user since '92 and this is the only thing that bugs me about them - that there can be only one way to do everything. Everyone is different and use their devices in slightly different ways. One way doesn't work for everyone, just give us a couple of options.

The one thing that is confusing me is there is no "photostream" album.

Are you saying that the "photos" tab and the "recently added" album are the photostream now?
