I just upgraded my iPhone and my iPad to iOS 8.
If I enable iCloud Drive on these devices, does that mean I can no longer sync bookmarks, contacts, calendars, and notes between them and my Macs that are running Mavericks?
Yes. It will not work until you install Yosemite which has not been released.
I've seen some articles saying that this only means that I won't be able to sync documents between Mavericks and iOS 8 using iCloud Drive ... and some people have said that bookmarks, calendars, and other data from the default Mavericks tools *will* still sync. But then I still hear a lot of people saying that NOTHING will sync. Is there any article from Apple clarifying this?
Well, Mavericks has no knowledge of iCloud Drive, so it's unlikely you can sync a thing until you have installed Yosemite.
There is no article from Apple because Yosemite is still in beta. You will just have to take my word for it. 😀 However, this doesn't mean you can't sync the way you have been prior to iOS 8, just not via iCloud Drive.
No, I mean, I've been syncing bookmarks, contacts, calendars, and notes between Mavericks and my iOS 7 devices. When I upgraded to iOS 8, I made sure to tell it not to upgrade me to iCloud Drive because I want to keep syncing these things.
I'm just surprised that Apple isn't taking more care to make sure people know that if they accept iOS 8's prompt to upgrade to iCloud Drive, it'll break all syncing with the current version of Mac OS. In fact, because it converts one's iCloud account to iCloud Drive, telling my iOS 8 device to upgrade me to iCloud Drive will probably also break syncing between my two Mac computers running Mavericks.
As far as I know, activating iCloud Drive only affects Documents and Data it does not affect Contacts, Calendar, Notes, Reminders, Bookmarks, etc.
Just FYI: you will need to restart your iOS 8 device once, after upgrading to iOS 8 or purchasing a device with iOS 8 pre-installed, to get Notes to sync correctly through iCloud Drive. I tried creating documents in Notes from various iOS 8 and Yosemite devices, and my iPhone 6 didn't see any of the new documents. And documents I created on the iPhone 6 didn't show up anywhere else. Restarting the device fixed the problem.
Thank you sir. This solved my issue regarding notes not syncing between my iPhone and iPad. Unfortunately, I upgraded to iCloud Drive when I updated to iOS 8. I guess my macs may be out of the loop for a bit.
I'm in the same boat - my Mac is going to have to stay out of the loop for now. I was perfectly fine with staying with regular iCloud until Yosemite is released. Here's the kicker, though - I need to be able to use Numbers through the web interface. Guess what - you can no longer use the web versions of the iWork products unless you convert to iCloud Drive - no choice. That seems pretty lame to me. Either support it everywhere, or allow everything to work on the old version until everything is released and available.
Hi, I've put off upgrading to iCloud Drive as well (I've got ios6 and ios11 devices) but it's getting in the way of too many things.
Do your notes/reminders/contacts sync between iOS 7 and 8?
