Can't forget bluetooth devices in iOS 8 (greyed out)

I upgraded my iPhone 5 and iPad Air to iOS 8.

For both devices I've noticed that they appear twice under paired Bluetooth devices - ie. The iPad appears twice in the iPhone's bluetooth devices list and vice versa. In both cases I can only remove one of the duplicates using the forget this device option under 'I'. The other device has forget... greyed out.

ive tried resetting the network settings but this made no difference.

Does anyone know of a solution?

I had the same problem. This is what I did:

Log into iCloud.com and remove any files backed up in iCloud that are related to the device you can't forget.

When I upgraded to iPhone 6, I wiped my iPhone 5 and sold it to Gazelle. My new iPhone 6 and my iPad Air both were showing phantom pairing to the iPhone 5.

In iCloud, I found a failed backup and some damaged files linked to the old iPhone 5. I deleted those files in iCloud and the old phone magically disappeared from the bluetooth settings for the new iPhone 6 and iPad Air.

The only problem I still have is that the iPhone 5 still shows up in "My Devices" under iCloud Settings on iCloud.com. I can't remove it from devices because iCloud insists that the iPhone 5 is running iOS 8 and logged into iCloud (It's not.) I logged out of iCloud after turning off "Find My iPhone" on the iPhone 5 before I wiped the phone for resale.

I believe the Bluetooth problem is a bug in iCloud trying to link all your devices.

As a retired Broadcast Engineer and an I.T. network technican, I would like to say a special THANKS to fdelillo for solving this Bluetooth paired list problem! It's really a sad commentary that APPLE didn't care enough to provide this solution to their customers.

i TURNED OFF icloud on my iPad 4. Did a re-boot just for fun and then turned ON BLUETOOTH. Now the paired list shows ONLY the correct Bluetooth receivers, devices, speakers!

TIm Cook at Apple owes you a debt of gratitude for solving this problem for all of us. He might even want to think about hiring you.

THANKS AGAIN.

I removed the files directly on iCloud.com. On a Mac it's raven easier to deal with the problem:

In System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Storage, click on "Manage…" Click on "Backups"

I had some files in there that were listed as "Damaged."

I only use iCloud for my email and I don't use iCloud backups (I sync my iPhone by connecting it directly to my iMac) so for me, this field should have been blank. If you sync in the cloud, you may have a lot of files that you are acually still using. Only delete those files that say they belong to the device that you are trying to remove.

Like I already said, I still have my old iPhone 5 showing up in the "My Devices" list and I have no idea how to remove it.

One of the things I tried was simply turing off iCloud (on my other devices) and turning it back on to see if the problem went away. I'm glad something so simple worked for you. Your suggestion will probably resolve the issue for most other people and it's worth trying.

My problem was that I had corrupted files associated with the old iPhone 5 on Apple's iCloud servers. Those files couldn't be automatically deleted when I turned off iCloud. It seems iCloud became fixated with the files and wouldn't let me close/delete the account.

Hi Neil,

I had the same problem too - iPhone 5 iOS 8.0.2 and iPad air wifi iOS 8.0.2 - I don't backup through cloud.

This happened randomly yesterday (two connections suddenly, so I deleted one and then couldn't delete the other, or connect to it either).

Anyway, I rely on my iPhone 5 to tether to my iPad air so I changed my Personal Hotspot password (I changed a digit) and it allowed my devices to re-pair.

the old connection is still the but at least it's a workaround until Apple releases a fix.

Hopefully this works for you or anyone else too!! 🙂

As I stated in a previous comment that my Bluetooth paired list problem that everyone is complaining about had been FIXED after turning off icloud, then turning it back on along with "find my phone". Well, I was WRONG! The original list problem has RETURNED!

I to believe iCloud is the problem since it is what allows device sharing in an iTunes account. In my particular situation, when I have iCloud turned ON, EVERYTHING is OFF except "find my phone". In a matter of minutes on my iPad 4, up pops another ipad 4, an iPhone 5s, and an iphone 5. All as Bluetooth devices with the gray, no delete option.

SInce this occurred with the release of iOS 8, I believe it along with the "new & improved" iCloud is to blame!

Just moments ago I saw an Apple commercial on NBC advertising the new "HealthKit" app and it's many features. MOST Apple customers COULD CARE LESS. What Apple customers DO WANT is their expensive devices to WORK LIKE THEY DID PRIOR TO THE RELEASE OF IOS 8! Apple as a company, has lost it's way. Samsung has got to be saying, "I'm lovin it"!

This was bugging me like no other! I can't believe it, but I just fixed it. I still have my 5S (which is deactivated) so I booted it up and bypassed all of the setup except for connecting to my wifi...I then logged into my iCloud account on 5S while keeping an eye on the Bluetooth menu on my 6+...POOF! GONE! It vanished instantly as soon as I logged in. I then signed out of iCloud on 5S and hit delete from phone button that pops up when signing out, erased all settings once more and powered down. I then signed into icloud.com to check if the 5S was still showing up under devices, as I was having the same problem fdelillo mentioned, and that too was deleted, listing only my 6+ as it should 🙂

That would seem to be the best plan of attack. I logged out of iCloud on my old device after I turned off Find My iPhone, but the account didn't close because I had corrupted files keeping it active.

Unfortunately for me, I didn't realize the Bluetooth problem was related to iCloud until I'd already deposed of my old iPhone 5. Now that the corrupt files are gone, I'm sure that logging back into iCloud and out again, on the old iPhone, would clear the iPhone 5 from Devices. It's too late for me to do that.

What we really need is a method to remotely remove persistant devices from iCloud, either in iCloud Settings on a Mac or directly on iCoud.com

Is it really that difficult for Apple to allow you to select a device in Devices, have a button that says,"Remove This Device" and have it disappear from the Cloud for good?

I had the same problem. My iPhone was listed on my iPad but I couldn't connect to it and I couldn't forget it and re-pair. My iPad had the same symptoms.

I signed out of iCloud on both devices and on each device the listing for the other disappeared. Unfortunately it never reappeared so I still could not re-pair.

I then signed back into iCloud and the devices reappeared but they still cannot connect and they still cannot be forgotten.

Not being able to forget is now a much smaller issue. Not being able to connect means that I cannot use Bluetooth for personal hotspot.

Followup to my issue...

I have reset networking on both devices and signed out of iCloud on both devices. The unforgettable devices still appear and are unpairable. I was also still unable to pair them for using personal hotspot. I believe this was because personal hotspot was off. When I turned it on, they appeared to each other and were able to pair.

So to summarize what I've learned so far...

The devices are paired for the purposes of personal hotspot, and those devices are forgettable and can be added back when desired. The extra magical-mystery devices that won't pair and can't be forgotten are there whenever I am signed into iCloud. I don't know what they're for but maybe Apple will answer that question.

Does anyone know if Apple actually keeps track of and read the Support Community, do they acknowledge the threads in here in any way? I am just surprised about the lack of a response. Even the smallest gesture, a tiny acknowledgement that they were at the very least aware of the issue, would have given a much better impression. This passive approach gives the impression that they don't care at all. In fact, I learned from writing this reply that two antonyms of passive are, caring and interested..!
