Q: Photostream folder disappeared in iOS 8, along with all my photos in that folder. Please help!

good news. one solution for all. if you have a mac, go to open iphoto, click photostream on the right side, you will be asked to use icloud if you haven't use it before, after you click yes, all the photos in your previous photo stream file on i phone or ipad start to show up one by one. all the 1000, no matter then you took them. i am surprised why nobody else mentioned this easy solution before.

I think the way this will eventually work is that once the ability to store your photos on iCloud Drive comes back, you will have the option of photos you take on your iPhone automatically being saved to your iCloud Drive in addition or instead of on your iPhone. You also may be able to push photos to the iCloud Drive to free up space on your iPhone. They may believe that many people will be happy to have most of their photos stored in the cloud instead of on their iPhones. However, unlike Photo Stream, storage of your photos on the iCloud Drive will count against your cloud storage, but in case you haven't heard, Apple has drastically dropped the prices of additional iCloud storage. Eventually you may be able to pick and choose which albums and which photos you want stored where, but again this feature was pulled at the last minute by Apple because it wasn't quite ready, but once fully deployed, should work great. Yes, it won't be free anymore, but it will be really cheap, and much more usable, giving you the ability to organize and store photo albums on your iCloud Drive. Once this really gets going, Photo Stream as we know it will disappear.

Anything in the recently added folder is in your photo stream as well.  If you delete a photo it moves to the recently deleted folder on your phone and remains in your photostream.  Once you delete it permanently from the recently deleted folder it is also deleted from the photostream.  I just tested this with iPhoto on my mac open and watched my test photos appear and remain there when I deleted from my recently added folder.  I watched them disappear when I deleted them from my recently deleted folder.

One solution for all is not if you have a mac?!

What people need is clear instruction on how to get back their 1000 photos from photo stream if they only have one device and have updated it to the new iOS, I luckily had an iPad and iPhone, so didn't update my iPad and have now properly backed up all my photo stream photos on my pc.

Apple removing the ability to store 1000 photos for free is just a way to make money by asking you to invest in iCloud storage space, now

thats fine if they do similar to Microsoft and give long term Apple customers a few perks, I have 18 gig free storage one my Onedrive, which is great, all my iPhone photos sync to the one drive app, I have a onedrive folder on my pc where they all them appear and to back up I just copy to a different folder, no timescale how long they are held in the cloud for free and as I said 18 gig of free space.

Not sure this change has been 'for the customer', should have been phased out after ios8, giving people time to adjust and organise photos, who wants to hunt through 1000s trying to work out which are and aren't on the actual device?

THis has not been removed.

Also, note that the 1000 photos in Photo Stream has always been temporary storage.

It was there so you could add your photos to your computer/other devices.

It was never meant ot be long term storage.

OK, so wording aside this is a bit of a technicality isn't it? Could I or could I not view 1000 photos in my photo stream on my device regardless of their age last week, now I have updated my device can I still view these photos on my device? If the answer is no (which it is as far as I can ascertain), then something had been removed or amended, the functionality isn't the same as it was before and my personal view is that this has not benefited me the customer....

Yes, you could have.  But what you were looking at was the "My Photo Stream" folder on your device, not "My Photo Stream" in iCloud.  The device's copy of My Photo Stream and iCloud's My Photo Stream are only the same only for the first 30 days.  Beyond 30 days, photos drop out of iCloud but remain on your device since it will continue to accumulate activity from iCloud, up to 1000 photos.  Photos older than 30 days only exist on your device, or on your computer if you were saving them.

OK thanks, so where are the 1000 photos that were on my device? Are they under years/moments etc? as only 46 are in recently added.

Any photos from your device's copy of My Photo Stream which were older than 30 days were very likely erased from the device.

That's what I presumed and that's what is not very helpful about this update... Apple really should have given a pre-update warning regarding this, people's memories potentially lost. I am ok I use onedrive to save all photos and have them all on my iPad still that isn't on iOS 8 as yet, I just think this update has caused a problem that didn't exist before for some people and thats not a good thing and very un-Apple like in my opinion. Thanks for helping/clarifying though. Hopefully some may read before updating...

Note that this has nothing to do with iOS 8 itself.  The exact same thing would have happened if you restored from iOS 7 to iOS 7 ... restoring your device erases it and you can't recover things that aren't backed up or saved anywhere.  iCloud has never been a photo archive solution.

My photostream is gone as well. I don't like the word 'should' when people say the photos should be there if you click yes to delete then turn it on again. When I go into the settings >general >about it says I have 2069 photos but when I go into my photos it only shows 1275. Those other 794 are taking up space somewhere. When I log into iCloud from a computer it doesn't even show 'photos' as an option. The last time I connected my phone after an issue to restore, I lost all the photos on it. Most of my son's 6 years is on the device, a lot of it in the photostream.
